Hi, thanks for your replies.

So my Read Speed figures do seem to be consistent with others and inline with 1Gbps LAN throughput, which as you say, should be more than enough for even the highest bitrate UHD.
I tried playing from USB and no issues which means the LAN throughput must be dropping at some point.

Do I have to downgrade the f/w version in order to re-apply a later one ?
thanks

Having posted that , I've found some enlightening information on avg/max LAN throughput figures in thsi article.
https://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/understanding-lan-network-transfer-speeds/

If you have a gigabit ethernet card on your computer, your router or switch is gigabit and the receiving device also has a gigabit ethernet card, your max transfer speed jumps to a much better 1000 Mbps or 125 MBps (125 megabytes per second).

Again, you won’t get that theoretical speed, but you should be getting anywhere from 70 to 115 MBps depending on the type of files you are transferring and your network setup.

most hard drives (SATA 3.0 GB/s) will max out at a read speed of 75 MB/s

His figures seem slightly lower than I'm getting for a SATA III HDD, but maybe 1Gbps LAN is more of a limitation than I thought?

Hi,

Dune Vision 4K

In an effort to improve playback of large high bitrate 4K video files, so I bought Asustor NAS and doing the Dune Read Test I have seen a slight increase in the Read Test Average Speed compared to my microserver, but it still on occasion (3/4 times in a film) stutters.

Tests on various large (50GB+ 4K dolby vision files):

From Microserver (windows 10).  SATA II (300Gb/s) 5400rpm drive - Avg read speed for SMB: 70 - 90MBs

From Asustor NAS. SATA III (600Gb/s) 7200rpm drive - Avg read speed for SMB/NFS: 90 - 130MBs

I was expecting much more of an improvement, possibly in  the 200MB/s region due to SATA-600, but thats not the case.

The Dune is connected on a 1Gbps ethernet LAN to both boxes (a switch), so makes read testing easy once the sources are setup.
I've tried using both SMB and NFS, which is marginally better most of the time (~ 10MBs) over SMB.

The Asustor does have a 2.5Gbps LAN port but I'd need to update a couple of switches to be compatible to take advantage, even then I'm not convinced the LAN of 1Gbps is imposing any form of limit on the throughput, and of course the Dune only has a 1Gbps port (might be able to use 2.5Gbps USB adapter though?).

Anyway, LAN upgrade possibilities aside, how do these figures compare to anyone else who also plays files their LAN ?

I'd appreciate some comparison figures.
Thanks

I am using a rather long ( high quality Blue Jeans) hdmi cable, but I didn't think stuttering was a cable symptom. Wouldn't it just be 4K at 24fps for films?
I've done several bitrate tests and the built in file read test seems fine. But I can try moving box onto a short cable. Cheers.

Possibly on some but definitely not on others. But its stuttered on every single 4k film.

I didn't have any issues playing 1080p SDR content but as I've recently bough a 4K (Philips OLED936) TV I've been playing as much 4K content via the Dune as possible and almost all at some point during payback experience a bout of stuttering several times at random points during playback and its got to the point where I'm going to have to abandon using it.

I can playback the same 4K content using TV's built in Media Player and Plex app without any issue, albeit they don't recognise the DolbyVision if in video track, just playing using HDR (Atmos is recognised).

The TV (which I can also connect with WiFi ac without issue) and Dune both connect using same ethernet to a NAS, so it can't be those.  I've tried using Plex app on Dune but nothing at all plays with that.

Dune is on latest f/w.

I notice under the Android System Preferences there seems to be performance/network related settings but don't seem to make any difference.
Playback with less reserved buffers: disabled
Performance CPU mode: enabled

Under normal Video settings I have everything set to Auto (DV etc)

Under Playback Preferences , theres a HLS/Bandwidth: Auto  (should this be set to high ?) again makes no difference.

So I don't know if it a basic Dune player issue or if it's the use of Dolby Vision that causing the stuttering?
Sometime I can "fix it" by stopping, waiting 30secs then playing again and it'll get past the stuttering, but you can imagine doing that a dozen times, is frustrating and impractical.

Either way, the family insists we never now use the Dune, which makes it not fit for purpose.

Has anybody had this stuttering or any suggestions ?

Because I & family have many devices that all use the same Plex Server, which provides a UI that we're used too and anyone of us can jump from one device to another (in home or out) and resume whatever was in progress.
It also has automatic folder monitoring / scrapping (of new video files) dropped into various folders.  My Collection doesn't seem able to do that.

However, as this Dune was bought to be able to play 4K in one place (lounge / home cinema) its now more of a nice to have rather than requirement.
But if it (Plex client) can't use the new Dolby Vision engine capabilities (HDR etc) then I wouldn't swap using the Dune just for the frontend experience.

I can't get Plex to play anything, so it's all a bit of a mute point atm.

I was on the latest stable and it did that, updated to R18 Alpha last night and same issue.

On the plus side, the GUI overhaul looks decent.

If it was working, would the android app (Plex) be able to use the DV VS10 engine features or is that reserved for the internal Dune player ?

Does anyone have Plex working on latest stable or Alpha f/w ?

Thanks

Does this mean I've got a Plex issue or a Dune Vision 4K issue ?

Is there a log from either that I might be able to look at ?

I'll flash the Alpha f/w, to get the new My Collection GUI, see if that helps

Hi,

I've just bought the Vision 4K and updated it to latest stable f/w, I thought I'd try that out before attempting to flash the new GUI Alpha.
I've previously owned a Dune TV101, cracking little box so I'm familiar with the UI, but I can see its been developed much further than what that had.

Couple of early user questions:
Although I don't yet have it connected to a 4K TV , that's hopefully coming in a couple of weeks  (Philips 65OLED936), so using it in 1080p via an AV amp (can only do 1080p also).

Problem with Plex
I use Plex on many different devices for myself and family, I installed the android app and it connects to the Plex server and the frontend all seems to be working fine, but it simply won't play anything I select, I just get a blank / shaded screen with the whirring buffer/circle.

Checking on the Plex dashboard , I can see the Dune box is a registered device, but it doesn't indicate anything playing.
All the videos I've selected work fine on any other device.
Any ideas what the problem might be?

Assuming I can get Plex working, does it use its own player or the Dune internal player ?
Will I be missing out on the Dunes ability to use the DolbyVision engine/bells n whistles?

If thats the case, I may just switch to using the My Collection.

My Collection:
Does it auto re-scan any network source folder (SMB) or do I have to manually re-index all the time? as one of my source folders is constantly having TV/Films added and removed, so if thats not the case, for that folder I might have to revert to just viewing it in Favs.
This is one advantage of the Plex server monitoring and auto scrapping the folders, so would be nice if it did that.

That's it for now, any insight to those question appreciated.

PS. Thanks futeko for the prompt delivery service.

Hi,

Now that Chinese reviews are starting to appear on the Q10 Pro,  was wondering if you've any updates concerning the Q5 ?

eg. Photos, spec differences,  possible ETA after the Q10 , price difference  - anything really ?

Cheers
