The M3 is powerful enough to decode virtually all video up to 1080p. It's 1080p max though, no 4K.

Drawbacks of the M3 vs Q5 are that it's less powerful (particularly noticeable for games), weaker wifi (no antenna), fewer ports and a slightly strange design.

The M3 is a great box for playing video at up to 1080p. The Q5 is a more versatile all-round machine.

For reference, Blu-Ray rips are usually below 45 Mbps.

Using the MKV sample files here http://jell.yfish.us/, played at 1080p:

35 Mbps - M3 OK - Q5 OK
70 Mbps - M3 OK - Q5 OK
110 Mps - M3 OK - Q5 OK

You might tell that the m3 in kodi has no 1080p gui

Thats a big thing
Hopefully they fix it

Ongoing topic which is being investigated.

Kodi on the M3 reports it's resolution as 720p. Content plays at 1080p and my TV reports interface resolution as 1080p.

So either interface is being incorrectly reported as 720p when is in fact 1080p or interface is 720p upscaled to 1080p.

If so, why does it look bad then ? :p

perfect explanation....
just another question and you convinced me to buy it ;)
(i prefer m3 for what i do....but i could buy a q5....if need)
you tell "to decode all video up to 1080p" ,so why in the specification (bot of m3 and q5) says that is perfect for "up to 4k resolution" ?
thanks for answer.... i dont need a 4k tv now....but in the specs is written.....

My mistake. Crazy day. M3 can output 4K. It will also decode and play H.265 4K, but not at as high a bitrate as Q5.

If anyone has anyone sensibly sized test files (to establish at where Q5 plays stuff M3 won't) then I am happy to test them on M3 and Q5.

The FIFA video and bbb-3840x2160-cfg02.mkv from here http://www.libde265.org/downloads-videos/ are 60fps, both M3 and Q5 are 30fps max for 4K. Both videos do play but in slow motion.

I need 4K 24fps or 4K 30fps samples for proper testing.
