What would be the best replacement for the Q10?
« on: June 08, 2020, 07:41:48 AM »
So, it has firmware issues and the support from HiMedia is (was) patchy at best. However, its basic hardware feature set is pretty good.

It's compact.
It's quiet.
Has an easily removable internal 3.5"" HDD.
Supports the largest capacity drives available.
Has USB 3 A ports.
Has a USB 3 B port (so the internal HDD can run as a slave to something else).
Has a decent (not great) remote.

Obviously it could have better SOC features and better image quality, processing speed, audio handling etc, but overall it is not a bad unit at all.

That USB 3 B port is pretty important to me as it makes large (25GB+) transfers significantly easier.

If the replacement handles higher resolution, fine. More video standards, fine. Better HEVC processing, fine. AV1 would be nice but not critical.

I could not give a toss about the wireless capabilities or wireless performance.

So, what is out there with the same basic hardware feature set? It would need to have a Kodi fork.

I am interested in the Dune HD Pro 4K II with the new processor RTD1619

I also ask myself the same question, although I can do without the internal HDD, as I connect via LAN to storage boxes.
As for the GUI for organizing films, it shouldn't make Kodi regret.

Some comparison features:

I have not heard or seen anything regarding the HiMedia 8K yet. On this website > https://www.futeko.com/products/MP100.php it was first communicated late 2020, then around March, then June this year and now nothing...

I would now go for the new Amlogic S905X4 processor to replace or upgrade the Q10. DV8919 Amlogic S905X4 Android TV 10 OTT Box

That one is really not much use to me. It does not have an internal HDD.

My Q10 went to my daughter's room and I bought a zidoo x20 pro, I am particularly pleased with the quality of music playback and software stability.

Looks like a good unit but there is no USB 3.0 B port. So, no ability to slave the internal drive(s).

Solved the problem.

I'll just build a proper HTPC with trayless hot swap drive support. Ethernet at 100MB/s is too slow. Big transfers will simply be a case of pulling a drive and dumping it into a USB 3.1 drive dock.

As it is discontinued, if it breaks, a new solution has to be sourced. No support. Features rapidly becoming passé. Runs ancient Android 7.1.

Need more be said?

Now done. A 5600X AMD, big SSD, 1030GTX and all the 3.5" drives I want, plus hot swap bays to load content onto them (as I do not have 10Gb Ethernet).

Kodi scans are ridiculously fast. MCE type remote for Kodi was a fail. Poor response and poor command set. However, a small USB Flirc is fantastic. Excellent command set and better response than the Q10 remote. Perfect.

Not as compact or portable as the Q10 but at least it's easily upgradable and not going to run out of horsepower anytime soon. Happy camper.
