Preparing new HDD for Q10 pro
« on: April 15, 2016, 12:41:00 PM »
Hi folks,

I currently use a Mede8er X10003D with a 3tb internal drive, which I will be re-using in the Q10 Pro I've pre-ordered.

I've already copied all the content I want to keep off the drive to my Windows PC, so just wanted to check what the best way is to prepare the HDD and then copy data onto the Q10?

My assumption is:

1) Format the HDD in Windows - what format?
2) Install to the Q10 Pro - will this then just 'work' in Android?
3) Use as a USB slave on my Windows PC and copy the content back over?

Thanks in advance.

1) For Internal HDD use GPT and NTFS (should be the default)
2) Yes, it will be detected and usable straight away.
3) Using USB-Slave to PC USB-3 Host port will give Drive Max Speed for copying. No other method will be faster.

Could i have an official confirmation if the q10 Pro can support 8tb internal hard disk ? Because a member wrote to me that it only supports up to 6tb.
If so, the Seagate 8tb that i have on mind , has a speed of 5900 rpm.Is it combatible or not ? If not which 8tb Hdd would you suggest ?

Would this HDD be a suitable internal HDD for the q10pro? WD Red 6tb: WD60EFRX
Thanks for a quick answer

Not really Red are meant for Raid implementations. Pink, Blue or Green are better choices.

What about cluster size, Windows give options 512;1024;... So which one is suitable for Q10 pro. I read your post about this but still confused about cluster size. Thanks

Normally Default (4K) cluster size should do just fine. I got one report of somebody working with 8K only.
Don't use smaller than 4K that won't work.

Why is that not a good choice? I mean the idea is to buy a Synology DS416play when it comes out...so I could switch the harddrives between the systems...

What are the advantages of green, blue & pink?

An Internal Disk should mainly:  be silent, use little power, produce low heat. WD Green (now replaced by Blue will do that for you. They also have the lowest price/TB of all flavors. Speed and support for many parallel streams as supported by Red or Black is not important for a media player.

It will work though, so feel free to use it. Differences are in the controllers firmware, caching, rotation speed, auto spin-down, price/TB etc.

I agree with Nice Monkey. Very fast drives are unnecessary for media. The extra performance won't be used. Better to have something quiet and cool.

Thank Nice Monkey, it work wit 4K cluster size. My first trial did not work because of the common mistake : SATA pin is not fully attached. When I try the 2nd time, the led screen on Q10 flash for 2 second. This is maybe an indication for successful attachment of SATA connection.
