2. Insert the USB pen drive into any USB port of the H8.
3. With the H8 turned off, use a paper clip or pen to press and hold the the pinhole restore button on the side of the H8 (next to the power socket).
4. While keeping the restore button pressed, turn on the H8.
5. The H8 will show an Android droid logo and proceed to upgrade the firmware.
6. The box will auto-reboot when finished.

We've tested this firmware and it's very stable.
As much as we can test, there are a huge variety of formats out in the wild, so it would be appreciated if all test results / problems could be reported back in this thread.
If possible give codec info on any files that have problems. mediainfo reports would be great. https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
Things this firmware doesn't have are 1. auto frame rate switching in Kodi (24p switching is supported in the Media Centre app), 2. 23.976 support.
3D-ISO support has not been tested because of the lack of an available 3D TV this morning. Himedia tell us it works in Media Centre and in Kodi.

Download link i'm italian....?...Thanks.... ;)
-
I take it we must rename file to "update.zip"
-
I take it we must rename file to "update.zip"
No. Extract 'update.zip' from the download archive then copy it to a USB flash drive.
No renaming! We do this with all our firmware downloads because it prevents attempted installation of corrupted update.zip files.

Regretting that i bought zidoo x6 and not this H8
-
Significant progress by HiMedia on this. Wish I had a H8 to try; would be great to compare to Q5 and Zidoo X6 (when they add 3D in Kodi).
-
Regretting that i bought zidoo x6 and not this H8
Zidoo X6 is not a bad product. Software is good. Main problems I see are that the casing is too small / plastic / with too little ventilation, and I doubt Zidoo will be able to match Himedia long term for firmware improvements.
-
How you going to have some time to test the 3D-ISO support in Kodi?
-
To those of you testing with 3D displays, please check if the full 3D ISO output is rendered as "frame packing" by your display... vs. as half side-by-side. Basically press 'Info' or whatever on your display that shows what type of signal it's receiving. Thanks.

In Kodi, DTS-HD and TrueHD pass through are present BUT..
TrueHD..... Working
Dts-HD..... Not working, weird audio effect still present, can be fixed by pausing/un pausing the video.. very annoying.
Dolby..... Not working, Weird audio effects..
3D iso.... Gives option for 3D but plays Side by Side or in 2D..
With the Himedia internal player...
TrueHD.... Working
Dts-HD.... Working
Dolby.... Working
DTS.... Working
3D iso... Working... Full frame packed...
UPDATE.....
I've tested the 7.1 pass through in this firmware... With all other players that I've used I've only ever achieved 5.1 audio.. I actually thought there was an issue with my setup that I couldn't solve.. I have 2 test audio tracks with DTS-HD and TuruHD 7.1... Nothing will play them in 7.1.. Not even my Raspberry Pi that is supposed to or my Vidon box. (Which is virtually in the trash I might add)
This update plays them perfectly.!!!! :-) FULL 7.1 HD audio...
With the internal himedia player and with Kodi.! (Although with Kodi you need to pause then un pause the DTS-HD track)
-
3D iso.... Gives option for 3D but plays Side by Side or in 2D..
Same issue as Zidoo X6 via its native player. But, thought you mentioned before (forgetting which thread) that 3D ISO's did/do play properly via H8's native player?

Yes they do... Read the rest of my post.. ;-)
-
My bad... when you said HiMedia player, I assumed Q5. Glad it works with H8... so this is a fixable issue via Kodi I'd think.
-
I did some more testing with this tonight... Watched a full movie with the new firmware..
Full quality bluray Remux (mkv) with Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio, 2D.. Played using the Kodi interface..
I was quite impressed with the picture quality, looks like it has had a boost in quality since the last release, definitely better quality than my Raspberry Pi now... No 24p support though... It stayed in my native resolution 1080p/60fps
Played around a bit, pause, start fast forward, rewind etc.. A couple of audio qwerks when doing that but no real issues, Kodi appears pretty stable with no crashes..
I tried the internal player as well and this plays at 1080p/24p
Mort..
-
I'm disappointed the this update didn't fix the output video of Kodi to my Samsung 1080p TV and there is no ability to change it.
Please help if you no a fix. Thanks!

Can you describe the Dolby / DTS HD weird audio effect in more detail? I don't get it here with Denon amp. Can anyone else provide feedback on this?
I suspected that result for 3D ISO. At least it works in Himedia player, I will report back to Himedia that SBS is not a satisfactory solution for Kodi.
I don't have problems installing add-ons. SYSTEM - Settings - Add-ons - Install from repository works for me. I've just installed a couple of skins and video add-ons.

Yes, that's the current situation with auto frame rate switching. 24p switch works in Himedia player, but no auto switching in Kodi. I suspect this is tricky to fix but I'll add it to the list for Himedia.

This is an oddity. The interface is 720p upscaled to whatever the system resolution is set to. Not sure why it's like this, I will ask Himedia and add it to the feature request thread.

I hit display on TV to see what resolution the unit is producing, and it does say 1080P. So that's good. This 720p value within Kodi is not a true reflection on what is actually happening thru the videoout of the HDMI to TV (i guess).
I was pleasantly surprised to see all my addon's still within Kodi upon upgrading to 1.0.7 firmware.
Thanks!

The audio effect is like a weird vibration sound, almost as if the audio is cutting out every half second or so. I've never experienced it anywhere else and the audio works fine in the Himedia player..
That's weird about the Addon's.. I get the repo but when i try and select it nothing happens.. I've tried to install from a Zip file and it tells me that dependancies are not met.. Anyone else, or is it just me.?
Mort.?

I hope for more reports about the HD-Audio problem. What sort of amp do you have?
Add-ons are definitely OK here. I just installed many using the config wizard tool from the most popular such site and everything installs and runs as normal.

It's a pioneer VSX-922 AV Reciever..
With the addons I don't even get the "get more" option under skins.. I've just had another look and I now get "cannot connect to network server" when I select the standard repo..

I definitely have that option. Settings - Appearance - Skin (lists installed skins) - 'Get more' button is to the right of list.
Something has gone wrong somewhere with configuration. I suggest either reinstalling Kodi or reinstalling the firmware from scratch. Pre-installed custom Kodi is here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/0f3sbzidd2vlv3z/Kodi_15.1_151000.apk

Ok, reinstalling worked.! I had all ready tried reinstalling the update but I just got the same result... Installing the Kodi app on its own worked.. :-)

Same Dolby / DTS HD weird audio here in Kodi.
I'm using Denon 1610 amp.
Also i have random video freezing problems when playing DTS HD movies with HW and HW+. Something like 20-30 times for a movie.
Only in SW not freezing but no HD audio and poor video quality.
UPDATE
I think the weird audio in Kodi is related to hardware acceleration.
Disabling and then re-enabling hardware acceleration i was able to play an entire movie without the weird audio bug.
Seems to work only until next boot.
-
4. Full HD-Audio native support in custom Kodi (DTS / Dolby Digital / DTS-HD MA / Dolby TrueHD).
Anybody has successfully tested an entire movie with 7.1 passthrough with Dolby TrueHD?
oh man oh man I hope that's the case because then I would like to buy this box and see if it works with Atmos :-)

Pausing the unpausing works for me with DTS HD.. I've watch a whole movie with no issues after doing this...
Standard Dolby and DTS I still have major issues with though.... I'll have to give the HW acceleration thing a try later...

Strange but pausing and unpausing not working for me.

@MortUK
Zidoo X6 has artefacts in picture, and is same chip
Does this himedia has those?

What about Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus?
When was the HiMedia H8 released?

Dolby TrueHD works perfectly.. Haven't tried Dolby Digital Plus, haven't got anything to test it either.. Dolby Atmos passes through fine as TrueHD on my non Atmos system..
@skank
I have no issues with picture quality.. I've watched 2 full movies on it now... Both Remux from Blurays.. The quality is actually better than my Raspberry Pi 2.. Noticeably better...

Hello.
Does the HiMedia H8 has the same audio/HDMI passthrough problems as the Zidoo X6 Pro?
I just bought the Zidoo X6 Pro and I am totally upset with the one bug that is destroying what would be a wonderful product.
Every time I switch audio with the Yamaha AV receiver, I hear a HIIISSSSSS and the ONLY way I can stop it is by disabling/reenabling Audio Options -> Passthrough.
I like the product, but come on, this will damage my $3000+ speakers.
Any advice?
I am using the latest firmware 1.0.16.
Is HiMedia's problem the same as Zidoo?
Anybody had that problem with HiMedia and was able to fix it with a firmware update 1.0.16 or through some configuration in Kodi and/or Android?

no HIIISSSSSS since FIRMWARE HMD-1.0.7

I think we are talking about different noises.
I am talking about the noise I get when switching AV inputs.
Basically, DTS (or Dolby Digital, or DTS-HD, etc) changes to PCM, and I hear a HORRIBLE noise super super loud
It happens when I change AV inputs, for instance I am watching movies on AV2, then I change to AV1, then I switch back to AV2.
It's horrible.
Does HiMedia H8 has this problem?
I think you are talking about choppy audio which is different.
-
Im not talking about choppy audio.
All is working fine now except random video freezing 1 to 5 seconds long, and not for all movies.

Ok please help me buying this item.
Amazon.com it says I need to wait until November/December to get it from Luckymall.
HiMedia sold me the Q5 directly.
Any way I can get my hands in one of those?
Well, umm, let me think...
YOU ARE POSTING ON THE FORUM OF A RETAILER WITH A BIG BANNER ADVERT SELLING H8 AT THE TOP OF THE FORUM! :)
We would happily sell you a Himedia H8.
Beyond that, please don't post stuff about other retailers on our forum. You posted the same thing yesterday and I deleted it.

Hello , I ask a kindly info ... I installed the new firmware and note with pleasure ( and displeasure ) that the media player system reads the ISO 3d while kodi sbs ...... The only problem is that with the palyer System will not let me access to NFS mode nas network ( qnap 839 pro ) often throw me out ... on the other hand if I sign with kodi no problem .... the same is true if you try to access it with network access , the local player it always fails on the server while we kodi accessed perfectly . So to read ISO 3d full for now I have to use an external hd ... If someone can give me some solution thank him infinitely ....
I apologize for my English but one a traslator .. hope you can understand

You could try using a file explorer app like ES File Explorer to browse for media and launch the himedia player from that.
-
Update : I hope not to go o.t. Fixed issue ..... at least nfs , my shared folders contained blanks eg . ( Disc 6 - Film mkv ) . Rename the folder and removed the blanks sees everything perfectly ..... ( no network access as normal windows I always server error but otherwise ok .... )
Opinion the product is very good responsive even with complex files .
Now I am delighted with the scrap of kodi ( do not understand why in this release is missing the Italian language .... ??? ) . Overall very happy with the purchase ...
Thanks for the advice .. however, even with esGetoreflie , also launching from them did not work
Thanks for all..

With HiMedia's own player:
YES, The Himedia H8 can play Full 3D BD ISO files, In full 3D mode.
And it does a very good job of it.. It's actually the only player I've not had audio sync issues with and got to play with Full 7.1 audio... :)
Should have my H8 next week, thanks to Futeko. Reading that HiMedia's own player can play 3D so well is very encouraging. If HiMedia can't get internal Kodi to work (great if they can), honestly I'd be happy with a external player & wrapper solution like with Q5. Just need 23.976 added.

Hi guys,
I really like the H8 and the job you did to customize the ROM. But I also found a few problems with it. First thing is that some videos are jerking. I initially thought that this is because I am streaming via UPNP but it isn't. I figured out that the HiMedia mediaplayer does a good job (used a local/USB file) but Kodi 15.2 for the same file not. I think you need to know the issue but it is very annoying once you noticed that it is jerking. For it seems so that this is a FPS problem because I see that for some but not for all videos. Videos with 23,976 FPS are definitely jerking from time to time (seems to be a Kodi 15 issue for some FPS).
Second problem is that I am a MAC user and the box does neither read OSX nor ExFat filesystems (more a feature request).
Third problem is that most videos (primary tested MKV + 1080p) are jerking when streaming by UPNP. I figured out that this can be improved a lot by adding an advanced Kodi config as follows:
http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Modify_the_video_cache
(I played around with the buffer sizes and I think UPNP is now much better for me)
<advancedsettings>
<network>
<buffermode>1</buffermode>
<cachemembuffersize>157286400</cachemembuffersize>
<readbufferfactor>20</readbufferfactor>
</network>
</advancedsettings>
Except for that (and it does not make too much sense) I have the feeling that the videos run more smoothly when using the wireless interface (LAN interface is connected straight to a switch which is also connected to the UPNP server).
Last one is that I see problems with my HDMI devices. Seems so that the device causes HDMI-CEC problems (is it possible to block the CEC channel?).
Cheers

Short update - I tried BubbleUPNP and MediaHouse UPNP and both are not jerking at all. I am not an Android expert but I think both players are using the HiMedia Rockchip (HiMedia player) as a renderer. Up to now the HiMedia did not show any jerking for local or UPNP streams (using Bubble / MediaHouse as a wrapper) and tried a couple of containers already. So I think there is something wrong with Kodi 15 (maybe FPS) or with the hardware accelerator in Kodi.
-
I think you've hit the nail on the head. The Himedia player for H8 produces better results than the hardware decoding in Kodi. This will be improved as Himedia (and other manufacturers) improve Kodi hardware decoding for RK3368 chipset.

Hi,
I Have bought the Himedia H8 and installed this firmware, but I have problems with KODI that non recognize External Hard Disks in NTFS filesystem. Is there any workaround to fix this issue?
Thanks.

Hi,
There is one solution by using Paragon exFAT, NTFS & HFS+ .
But I think without root access workaround is impossible.

Thanks.
Kodi does recognise external drives formatted as NTFS.
If the drives aren't listed in Videos - Files try:
Videos - Add videos - Browse - Root filesystem - mnt - usb_storage.
Drives should be listed there as USB_DISK0, USB_DISK1 etc.

PERFECT! IT WORKS!!! THX A LOT!!

So you are saying that H8 shows artefacts too in kodi? Like zidoo x6 does.
Is your way explained here a definate solution?
Anyway, in a way i'm happy now its not a fault from zidoo

I think artefacts and jerking are very different things.
UPnP support (jerking) will be improved in Kodi as the firmware developed. In general everything plays well already in Himedia player.
-
what is jerking then
-
I noticed that with the standard player going back and forth with video files subtitles are no longer in sync and happened to someone I apologize again for my English are Italian and use a translator.
-
I already tested a lot of videos (local and UPNP) and I have seen artefacts but definitely not too often (Kodi and Himedia player) - not a big deal I would say.
Kodi 15.2 is jerking too much at the moment. For me it improved a lot by using WLAN, disabling MediaCodec (hardware acceleration) and enabling the caches as described before but this is not 100% fixing the issue - it is still stuttering for a lot of mkvs (not only at 23/24 FPS).
Good news is that the HiMedia Mediaplayer / eHomeMediaCenter (UPNP) is doing a good job for me (configured 1080p/60Hz and enabled 1080p24Hz / optical out). Did not see any stuttering for mkv movies up to now (local & upnp). One exception are a few TV series. The mkvs are 1080p, H264, 23,9762.. FPS and are stuttering using Kodi and the mediaplayer. VLC (MAC) and my WD TV Life are rendering these without any problem.

Jerking is the video stuttering.
Artifacts are blocky features caused by compression. In the Q5 vs X6 images posted on the Kodi forum, there is a big difference between smooth blocks of colour on Q5 and blotchy blocks of colour on X6. H8 doesn't have this problem.

Another question: with the Netflix i Have a problem with sync between video and audio, how can I fix this?
Thanks!
It should be in sync. How far out is it? How is the H8 connected to TV/amp.
What version of Netflix are you using?
The pre-installed H8 Netflix is here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/ea9dr76do7j5z9b/Netflix_3.11.1_build_4421_4421.apk

Noted and will be reported to Himedia.

Hi, I just got my box HIMEDIA H8 and I immediately updated the firmware with this "HMD-1.0.7 FUTEKO".
From the first tests I found the following problems with my box:
- playback of DVD-Folder and DVD-ISO do not work (HiMedia player)
- several times, playing returns the "ErrorCode -1010" (HiMedia player)
- MKV file playback is choppy (Kodi)
- the audio is out of sync (Kodi)
Sorry for my English (made in google :-[).

Hello everyone and thanks for all the support you offer. I apologize if my English is not perfect .
Having said that I am a happy owner of this TV box and I updated the firmware . I am having trouble with the simple addon IPTV client . Kodi not let me install it . It is not present among the PVR addon . You are having this problem ? I do not know how to install . Thanks for your help
Hi Nitro,
Are you able to see any PVR Addons.? I think that are disabled in this version of the Firmware..

Hello MortUK and thanks for the reply! I think so too! Now I downloaded from the official website Kodi 15.2RC2 and the problem is solved!

The h8 is connected by hdmi at the TV. The version of Netflix is the latest on play store.
Do you get the same problem if you use the pre-installed Netflix? You'll need to uninstall the Play Store version first.
The pre-installed H8 Netflix is here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/ea9dr76do7j5z9b/Netflix_3.11.1_build_4421_4421.apk

1. I see this too. Also with MX Player. Bug info passed to Himedia.
2. What files? Is there a pattern to it?
3. Noted. Kodi performance will continue to be improved.
4. What files? Audio codecs?

You can install any version of Kodi, but note that with anything other than the Himedia version you'll lose some video decode performance and the 7.1 audio options.

I have the same issues as alessalvo audio lag when playing MKV files using Kodi. 0.4 sec delay. Easily adjusted within Kodi. I found with libstagefright switched of video playback was much improved, but audio sync problem still present. Happy that Kodi plays my 3d MKV files but i did have an issue playing one file which is split into two sections. Kodi recognises that the two halves are the same movie and plays them consecutively but when it starts to play the second half the audio goes further and further out of sync. All in all happy with the product and i am sure that things will improve with updates in the future.
