Multichannel Music Files
« on: August 08, 2020, 01:41:08 PM »
Hi
Does the Z9X playback multichannel music files over HDMI?
I have some music files that are 5.1 channel FLAC, up to 192k and some 5.1 channels DSD files, can these be bitstreamed via HDMI so that my amp can receive them as 5.1 PCM and DSD respectively?

If so can it do this gapless too?

PS I would want to do this over DLNA

Yes FLAC wiill work MCH but DSD will not work at all. Even DSD 2CH will be converted to PCM 2CH via HDMI

If so can it do this gapless too?
No, will be reserved feature for HiFi players (those with an Analog Audio Panel)
But with SACD ISO playback it will be gapless obviously as it is a single file.
You can create create single FLAC files with CUE sheets to bypass this problem as I do myself for Live recording mainly using the Windows XRECODE3 APP.
Use that same program to convert MCH SACD ISO's to single MCH FLAC's with CUE sheets too.

PS I would want to do this over DLNA
No DLNA does not support HD Audio formats as far as I know (use SMB/NFS instead).

Cant answer whether or not the z9x does what you want but what nicemonkey stated regarding dlna and hd audio formats is not true.
I stream 2 and multi-channel DSF files via dlna everyday.

Thanks muslhead, totally agree. I have an Oppo 205 bluray player that I stream to using DLNA and it works with FLAC up to 192k 24bit including multichannel and DSD including multichannel but it does not support gapless.
It also supports Dolby Vision playback off UHD bluray rips but only via USB.
I also have a Marantz 7012 AV amp that does support gapless playback over DLNA including 192k and DSD but it only support stereo not multichannel, which seems strange for a 7.2.4 channel amp.
I was hoping for something that would do everything in one box.

Good to hear it works via DLNA. I know some boxes are more tolerant with DLNA than others. Officially the supported formats related to the DLNA standard is quite restricted.

Always good to learn. Never use DLNA myself and use SMB always as it is truly content independent.

Interesting

I only have experience with dlna and never had a problem (yet) playing anything. Crosses fingers
