Hello,
I bought a HDD last week and i made a short tutorial to install a internal hard drive disk.
-----------
Installing a new internal HDD in the Q10 pro
the material is on the desktop : Q10 pro, HDD, usb cable A-B
(https://web.archive.org/web/20180830120426im_/http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/726057DSC02306.jpg)
The box is OFF, we open the hood and insert the HDD
(https://web.archive.org/web/20180830120426im_/http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/338729DSC02309.jpg)
Push on the SATA connecter, if the HDD is connected properly the box will recognize it (the buttons in front will briefly light up), ,then take the box and plug it using the usb3 slave to its pc/mac. It should be seen as external support.

If the new disks appear as not initialized, Open Disk Management: Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management, Right-click the Disk Number (unknown) and select “Initialize Disk.”, choose GPT.
After drive initialization, right click on "Unallocated" area and choose "New Simple Volume..." to format the new volume, (i have chosen D letter)

HDD is now formatted
you transfer the files if needed.
You can then reconnect the box to your audio/video system.
Note :
Personally i use a Sony 64GB USB Flash Drive (it is small and easy to handle) to transfer movies on Q10 pro’s internal HDD. But you can to used SAMBA, External portable hard drive or directly connect the Q10 pro on the PC/MAC.
see you

Many thanks for this topic #Olivier ;D
It shows how easy it is to install and format.
The Q10 Pro acts just like any standard external USB drive when plugged directly into a PC with a stock USB 3.0 cable in the back.
This will make bulk copying of movies and music to the internal hard drive via USB quick and very easy!!
Partitioning and formatting a 4Tb NTFS drive under GPT 4k (which a lot of media players and TV's will not read) was simple using Windows 10.
I turned the power on the Q10 Pro after installing the drive and it was found by Windows easily.
-
Finding the internal hard drive using "Media Center" is easy as shown above by #Olivier.
To find and add the new internal hard drive directory to Kodi's Library (which uses Android file structure) you need to locate the internal drive under:
/root/mnt/sda/sda2
Use the same directory structure to find the internal hard drive on your PC network:
/Network/ANDROID_B927C/share/sda/sda2
(This is the default name of my Q10 Pro found under Windows). You can then use a PC to perform normal file functions on the drive (copy, delete, rename etc).
I have noticed that copying over LAN is much slower (6MB/s) than copying to my Seagate Central (34MB/s) on the same LAN switch as the Q10 Pro. When plugged directly into the PC, the Q10 Pro copies large files much faster (at around 90MB/s).
-
This is a very well made tutorial, but i have a strange problem:
No matter what i do, my new Q10 Pro does not see the internal HDD - but my pc does.
It is a Samsung HD155UI (1,5 TB).
My pc sees it without problems as an external drive when it is in the Q10 Pro, but the box itself does not.
The front panel also does not flash twice when inserting it.
It tried both formatting guides i found here.
I'm at a loss here, if there isn't a solution i'll have to return it. :\

This is a very well made tutorial, but i have a strange problem:
No matter what i do, my new Q10 Pro does not see the internal HDD - but my pc does.
Since your PC sees it as "Drive G:" does this mean you already partitioned and formatted the drive before putting it inside the Q10 Pro?
It is easier to plug the Q10 Pro into your PC first and make sure it is working as a normal external drive. Refomat to NTFS if not already done?
Disconnect from your PC and connect back to the TV with HDMI cable and Media Center should then show up the new Hard Drive as per the tutorial above?

I formatted it as an external drive on my pc and then put it in the Q10 Pro,
then i tried formatting it while it was in the Q10 Pro... the result is always the same.
Q10 Pro does not light up when i insert the HDD. I can use it as an external HDD enclosure
and my pc will recognize it just fine, but Q10 Pro itself won't.
I also tried this tutorial: http://www.futeko.com/newforum/index.php?topic=541.msg3809#msg3809

Tested many things for HDD but never formatted a HDD when inside a player via the USB-host port. Tested fast copying with all Windows flavors though.
What I know for sure is that NTFS drivers used for Android are simplified versions not supporting all variants/options possible valid and handled by Windows 8/10 OS. So the drive being recognized by a PC via USB3-Host port and not by Android is possible.
A method which always worked was connecting the drive (meant for Internal deployment) via (E)SATA to a Windows 8/10 PC and formatting is MBR/NTFS or GPT/NTFS . If still giving problems do the show command documented in my tutorial.
-
I formatted it as an external drive on my pc and then put it in the Q10 Pro,
I remember having formatted a RAID as external drive in Windows several years ago, but if you have done the same then something has gone wrong. You're supposed to connect it to the internal SATA connection of the PC, partition it using disk management and then format it normally. There should be no mentioning of formatting as an external drive. Doing that creates some kind of special partition which the Q10 probably won't understand. Try connecting it and recreate the partition in the disk manager. Just formatting again won't change anything.
-
:-* you two.
That was it - the HDD had to formatted while being connected via SATA to a Windows PC.
Now the Q10 Pro also sees it.
I was ready to give up and buy a new hard drive, so thank you very much! :)

Don't know where to place this.
But was looking for a quiet, reliable, low power HDD (for power requirements on Q10 Pro) and I thought WD Red 8tb WD80EFZX would pay the bill. And IT DID!
Formatted first in my PC in GPT/NTFS and copied all my Music and Videos and then inserted it on my Q10 Pro. No hitch.

The WD80EFZX is a nice HDD, but above my budget. Using a Seagate a 8TB Archive instead. That one also does its job.
Regarding performance and heat/power that does not make a difference when used for a media player. The WD should be more reliable.

Have installed a used HDD and formatted as per instructions. I have transfer files well over 100 Mbps, very Happy :) using the usb3 cable. The 5M cable can go through the wall reaching the Hi Media connected to the TV and would love to keep this great speed transfer , but once the USB 3 cable is connected to the Media Player, I can no longer read the internal HHD through the media centre.
When cable is disconnected everything works perfectly.
Am I doing something wrong

Does it work when the External HDD is connected via a short USB3 cable? For USB3 a cable of 5M is really long. I don't recall official limits.
-
Too many power requirements for Q10 Pro? Have your External USB drive connected thru a powered hub...

This sounds familiar.
I tried a lot with my HDD to get it to work inside the Q10 Pro.
Always had to put it back in a case and use it as an external HDD, because it wasn't recognized by the Q10 Pro, only by our PCs in the network.
But - there was always a long USB cable leading from my PC to the back of the Q10 Pro.
I am currently wiping the HD in question, will reformat it to GPT/NTFS, put it in the Q10 Pro without that USB cable being connected.
I hope that works, otherwise i'll have to send the box back. :\
edit:
Are you f*****g kidding me.
Seems like it really was that USB cable.
Booting up Q10 Pro with internal HDD and no USB cable connected - HDD is recognized.
Put in USB cable - HDD vanishes from file explorer.
Will test some more.
edit2:
It really was that cable. -.-

Hi,
i've used this method to format my new HDD (Seagate 1TB).
Us the slave usb conected to my mac, and formating EXT3 the hdd using paragon exfs for mac.
The q10pro detected the hdd perfectly
the problems started when i tried to play any movie i copied to the hdd.
The q10pro doesn't play any movie, giving me a "video issues"
a couple of movies of the hdd:
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/924/gjz1QS.jpg) (http://imageshack.com/f/pogjz1QSj)
ERROR trying to play one movie:
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/924/ly6WcO.jpg) (http://imageshack.com/f/poly6WcOj)
The funny this is that the q10pro can play any of those movies through the network using samba:
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/922/a8CHdR.jpg) (http://imageshack.com/f/pma8CHdRj)
what can I do to make it work and play movies well?
thanks

Speaking of heat, how are you guys doing? I had a spare 2TB WD Black that I tried in there and I could have baked eggs on the unit. So I went with a 250Gb SSD instead and use large and much better ventilated external drives instead.
The SATA port of the q10 looks extremely slow, so I think investing in a fast drive is a total waste of money. You better aim for low power/quiet and cool.

I did everything according to instructions, but why Q10 sees the hard drive as sd card? and a drive name is sda2? while formatting I called it :A
My player working on android 7.

Android likes to think of all external storage as being an SD card. It makes no difference to how it performs and in fact helps with compatibility with apps that expect all external storage to be an SD card (like a phone).

I followed the steps in the first post. My Q10 pro is stock with 1.0.6 firmware Android 5.1.1. The HDD i installed was WD Blue 3TB 5400rpm SATA 6Gb/s 64MB (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822235012)
1) First using a USB 3.0 A-B cable with the HDD installed into the Q10 Pro. Managed initialize and format 3TB WD Blue HDD into GPT/NTFS in Windows 10
2) Using HDD USB 3.0 to SATA enclosure. Managed initialize and format 3TB WD Blue HDD into GPT/NTFS in Windows 10
In both scenarios, I am able to use the HDD within Windows 10 environment but not able to detect the HDD in Q10 Pro. I verified that the SATA port in the Q10 Pro was working by installing an old 1TB MBR/NTFS drive. My drives shows up as pictured below.
I saw several suggestion to initialize and format new HDD in a PC before using it in my Q10 Pro. Unfortunately I don't have a PC to do so. Any workarounds? Should I upgrade my firmware? Thank you for your advice.
-
Just installed FW1.0.9. HDD still not showing up in my Q10 pro.
I partitioned my HDD 3TB into half (GPT/NTFS) to reduce partition size to below 2TB per partition. HDD not showing up in Q10 pro either.
3.0TB WD BLUE WD30EZRZ (Disk 1)
Could this be an issue of incompatibility with my WD Blue? I have seen many people here having success with drives >2TB. Any other workarounds? Thank you.

That is just how Android see storage. A:, C: etc are Windows drive names.
To mount the drives according to label or UUID see here: http://www.futeko.com/newforum/index.php?topic=1421.0

Any solution to this issue yet?
Facing the same problem, if i want q10 to detect the HDD, i must unplug the usb cable connected to it first, which is quite troublesome as ill be transferring movies to the q10 with HDD inserted.

This is how the box works. The USB transfer feature is meant for one off file transfers and not a constant connection via USB to a PC.
If you want to do regular transfer Samba or FTP should be used. If you install an FTP server on Q10 Pro transfer is very fast.

Hi. I read the message above warning that this topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days but as a newbie do not where else to post my experience following the first video.
Having spent most of the day reading topics on this subject and following instructions I finally found the first video which got me a 95% solution. However there was an omission at the end of the video. After formatting the volume in Disk Management win 7 shows as New Volume it requires a drive letter . Once that was given the drive was visible in windows and allowed files to be copied across. Hope I a treading on any bodies toes.
Learnt a lot today. Many thanks to all for help.

Hello!
Do we need to switch ON or OFF the Q10 Pro when connected to the PC to get the internal HDD recognized and be used to transfer?
Thanks fro the reply!

USB is nothing but a probelm from day one. It's a one connection that does all, but not without problems.
It's another 'interface the date has to go thru. SATA to USB back to SATA. Since the Q10 has a easy to remove HDD, do so, open up your tower (unless you have an eSATA port) and connect the drive internally for a direct xfer. A couple of extar steps, but far less problems and it's faster. ;)
-
There is no need to remove the internal drive. As already noted, plugging a USB 3.0 cable into the rear port of the Q10 (and switching on) makes it behave exactly like an external HDD from Seagate or WD when plugged into a PC :)
I even use a Seagate PS plug pack to power it, away from the TV room.

Hello All
Can someone please confirm that the Usb cable A-B referred to here in, is basically a high speed blue Usb cable with two male connectors.
Thank you

No, it's the same cable you might use for a printer. The Q10 Pro has a USB Type-B slave USB port on the back.
As here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/AmazonBasics-Male-B-Male-Cable-Feet/dp/B00NH13DV2/

Thank you. Just looked at the back. Was not even aware it was there. Presumed the Usb blue port was the one on the side, even though the back was mentioned. 🤔🤔 hey Ho

Hello Again
Back on this job. Now have the correct lead. Now my initial problem is that with lead plugged into Pc , shows the drive etc, but after say 30seconds the drive disappears from the screen. I then have to unplug from Pc, reinsert and then I have another 30 seconds, which unfortunately isn’t enough time for me.
What would be the cause of the Pro 10 disk disappearing. It’s on , so is PC so why, and where is the button I need to keep the pro 10 visible for longer.
Many thanks
