Title: Fast, constant and easy SAMBA App?
Post by: Alter_Schwede62 on May 20, 2016, 07:31:59 AM
Hello

I know, we have a very easy one click SAMBA Service on our Q10 Pro, but I have the problem, that sometimes the LAN Copy rate is 24MB/s (not bad), but sometimes I only have 2.5MB/s (very bad). That is not very constant. I could not find out what the reason was for that inconsitance.
Most of the time it happens, when I switched on the Q10 Pro, did 30 to 60 minutes nothing, and then wanted to copy movies.
When I at once  after switching it on copied files, it always was fast, I could even watch movies and the copy rate was high.
Perhaps someone has an Idea, why the Pro has this behaviour.
I could imagine, that perhaps a energie Saver runs after 30 minutes, and has a bug, so that it does not wake up correct... don't know.

So I have a Pro with a USB Fantec 4 bay HDD case.
Now I am looking for a stable, fast, constant and easy to setup SAMBA App.

Is there an App that is able to do that?

Will join in for this quest. The Samba Server is also incompatible with many Clients as it reports the wrong disk size and worse the wrong free space. Further not all content is seen by all clients (some don't see the USB attached drives for some reason).

Finding an alternative Samba server is not easy. I doubt if a good working one can be found which does not require ROOT rights. Anyway prefer problems to be fixed by Himedia instead.

Will redo some performance tests after the box is running idle for a long period.

Solution not must be Samba App.
Samba protocol is not native Linux protocol, give a try FTP server, and share your experience.

FTP Server Ultimate
Code: [Select]
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.icecoldapps.ftpserverultimate&hl=en
Kingston ultimate 3.0 G3 connected on USB 3.0 Q10Pro  & FileZilla FTF client on windows PC

Note because of security setting of sdcard trying to accessing over FTP server maybe you get error "550 Invalid name or chroot violation".

Thanks for thinking along but no won't do. Not primarily meant for accessing the media files from a PC but to use Q10 pro as a real Samba Server with multiple Plug & Play HDD instead of a complex and inflexible NAS.  Most media players typically don't support FTP for playing  movies/music/pictures.

Hello Nice Monkey
Alter_Schwede62 not ask for using Q10Pro like NAS, using Q10Pro like NAS it is different story.

I want to use the LAN Connection to the Pro only for copying the movies to the 4 plugged USB HDDs.
Until one week ago I always took them out of the Fantec, went to the Computer an plugged them into another USB3 case, what I was doing for many years.

But copying the movie files via LAN is much more practical. But I want a constant connection.
For me it seems, that if I switch on the Pro, let it be for 30 - 60 min., some Hardware or Software is falling into Energy saving mode.
And if I the try to copy files, there are only 2 - 4MB/s possible.

If I switch thw Pro on, and copy files everything is fine.
I I switch it on, watch movies, and after some minutes copy files to it, everything is fine, by copying with 24.5MB/s.

If this is a bug, and other users could reproduce it, then Himedia should correct it.
If it is a fault of my LAN or anything else, Himedia should not do anything.

I discovered, what the fault was. It was my fault.

At the beginning I was working with WLAN. Later I switched to LAN.
What I did not know, was that now on the Pro two networks were activ.
When I copied files via network to the Pro, is sometimes used the LAN and sometimes the WLAN connection!  :o
Wow! I thought, that if I activate LAN, the Pro automatically switches off WLAN... The Pro does not.

So I manually had to disable  the WLAN connection, and now I have constant 24.5MB/s copy speed.  :)
Oh man, such a little thing, that has that fatal consequences!   :-\

Good to know the cause. Thanks for sharing. Many  media players don't even allow Wireless to be active when Enabling Wired (it won't even work then) .
Now for a correctly working Samba Server.
