Title: Considering Q5 or Shield TV: questions about hi10p
Post by: Morien on April 18, 2016, 08:52:31 AM
Hey everyone,

I'm upgrading from a WDTV Live and considering getting either the Q5 or a Shield TV but have some questions. My primary use for the box will be Kodi, so much of the Shield TV's functions will be unused. I have already tried an Apple TV 4 but found that, while an amazing step up from the WDTV, it wasn't a solution for me, just a step-up. If you could test some files for me I'd greatly appreciate it.

1080p hi10p playback. Used primarily in anime, this is really the only file format I ever had that my WDTV could not play. It is kind of a deal breaker, only because it is hard for me to justify a new box that doesn't do this well (ATV did it admirably, but the A8 was not powerful enough to do well).

For some good samples:

https://www.koi-sama.net/files/hi10/ (https://www.koi-sama.net/files/hi10/) - File #8 may be the one to give you the most trouble (particularly at around the 7s mark

Just out of reference, the Shield will play all of these no problem (using SMPC, which automatically switches off hardware decoding for hi10p content, which you may need to do to test these).

Thank you

there are ANY hardware can be decoding h.264 hi10p ARM,x86 ecc ,it's NOT a standard ,so only software decoding can be done.
The best solution is celeron/i3 HTPC , shield can be decoding but with some limitation i remember.

H.265 10 bit it's new UHD standard can be deconding for lot of hardware.

h.264 hi10p and H.265 10 bit it's very different!

you must re-encoding your anime into H.265 10 bit.

Last file (Clannad) - Plays OK in HiMedia player app. Plays OK in Kodi without wrapper.

File #8 Suzumiya  - Plays OK in HiMedia player app. Stuttery playback in in Kodi without wrapper with some artifacts.

Howl - Plays OK in HiMedia player app. Stuttery playback in in Kodi without wrapper with lots of artifacts.

Thanks guys.
Yep, hi10p h264 such as used by anime has no hardware decoders that I know of. Shield plays those files quite well (I'm told), but that is because of how strong the tegra x1 is.

Thanks for checking for me!

Edit: Just a quick q, I'm assuming you turned off hardware decoding in Kodi's advanced video settings before testing? Thanks again

I didn't change any settings. Presuming UHD did turn off hardware decoding in the video, it appears the files all play OK with it turned off.

Awesome! Thank you very much for that!

Thanks for testing, everyone!
