Hello,
i would like to buy HI8 to play flac music file 24 bit 96 or 192k. I suppose it works with output optical linked to my external dac. Hi8 should be sent via digital optical output audio files to the external DAC that will make the digital to analog conversion. Does it work o file will be converted to less resolution ?
I could use various media player app from the Android store that support FLAC.
Thank you
Yours sincerely

It's a limitation of Android 4.4 and earlier that all music audio (everything except DTS/AC3/DTS-HD/True-HD with video) is downgraded to 44kHz max.
That goes for output via HDMI or S/PDIF.
This limitation is removed with Android 5.1 and later so the new Himedia products will support passthrough for up to 192 kHz 24bit audio (FLAC etc).

Should add that 192kHz audio can be played on H8 using many apps but it will be passed as 44kHz.

Confirmed also for Q5 and Q10: Even valid for other brands and products. Another untold story when moving media players over to Android.
This was done too quick and too early. Lollipop is a real improvement but still not perfect.

But H8 octa runs Android 5.1, so theoretically it should be possible to do it.
I don't have flac files, so I can't test it and I'm not familiar with the Kodi music player.
Is there a possibility with the Himedia custom Kodi music player with "passthrough" like in the video player or does the Kodi music player always perform a down conversion?

You are absolutely right, these are the drawbacks to use a telephone/tablet OS for media players.

But himedia Hi8 is an android 5.1, so it should be possible or not?

Yes, it runs 5.1. I was wrong to go off on the Android 4.4 explanation, sorry.
The situation is the same though for H8, it passes everything as 44.1 in all apps. That's been tested by us.
Exactly why since it is running Android 5.1 I don't know. I will ask Himedia when they're back from Chinese New Year (start next week).

It seems that with Android 6 there will be support for 24-bit audio and 96k
