Just picked up an H8 box, loaded the new firmware and began to configure the box and reading the forums.
Kodi didn't work, and I re-installed from the Play Store.
After that, everything worked. I mounted up some content and began testing settings.
Everything seemed fine and I left to doing something else for a couple of hours while kodi was scraping some content.
A couple of hours later I came back and started working again, except that my kodi configuration seemed to be different and then the box crashed and would not respond to the remote to turn back on. I unplugged and re-plugged the power cable and everything started again. I began to play some content and after about 10 minutes, the same thing.
I re-downloaded the firmware from this site, rather than the himedia support, reloaded the firmware with a hard reset, but the box will only stay on for about a minute then shutdown and will not respond to the remote.
When the box is up, I have control via the remote etc.
The red light on the box is solid (not flashing)
Having seen no other posts similar to this on this forum, I suspect that the problem is electrical, either with the power supply, and most likely at or in the H8 box itself.
Is there anything else I can try?
thanks for responding in advance

Where did you get the box from?

I can confirm, with the last upgrade the Himedia H8 freezes and act weird. No install of repos and most addons possible without that the box freeze to death...
Tried newer versions of Kodi, all of them..same thing! This Box is somewhat...

I purchased the item from Canada Computers.
Is this relevant to the operation of the device?

Yes. Because we have no idea where they got it from, what sort of PSU they ship, and what firmware was loaded onto it.
The latest firmware on our hardware with our PSU ( :) ) is stable.

I returned my faulty equipment and it was replaced by the seller with another box.
So far so good, but I've bumped into the Kodi passthrough DD/DTS audio dropout issue, even after upgrading to 16.0
This was raised back in August of 2015, but seemingly without resolution.
As noted then, the internal media player handles the output fine.
Will there be a resolution to the KODI issue with audio passthrough. This seems to be a key feature of the platform on the Himedia site and it not be addressed for a number of months. Unless I missed a post somewhere

You need to install the kodi from the Himedia firmware, not the regular Kodi from Kodi. The Kodi for H8 have additional rockchip codecs and can handle 7.1 audio. If you use normal Kodi, you lost the 7.1 audio. I think you can remove your kodi 16 and try to install the Kodi that is inside the Himedia firmware, if you unzip the file you will see the kodi apk inside. I am not sure but I believe that you can install this kodi apk, without the need of a fresh install (to avoid RESET key fresh install)

You can also install Zidoo X6 Kodi.
Zidoo X6 Kodi shares the same open source code as the Kodi pre-installed in HiMedia firmware but Zidoo have a later firmware with pre-installed Kodi 16 final. I've just tested it on H8 and it seems to run well. Uninstall pre-installed Kodi first then install this: http://www.mediafire.com/download/tb2x6h5y5bd7065/kodi.apk
Or wait for next HiMedia H8 firmware, which will have updated pre-installed HiMedia Kodi.

Thanks for the advice.
Question:
1. Removing the "Himedia Kodi" and installing the "Zidoo Kodi" on H8, the icon "KODI" in Home page, if selected, will still work?

I have tried this latest Zidoo kodi 16 and although it solved one problem i had with Hdhome displaying distorted SD images it created another in that i get no sound at all if i select HDMI passthrough. Guess i will have to wait for Himedia to release their next update

In my case I had to adjust Kodi settings in order to get Audio throught HDMI, I am connected directly into a full HD TV by HDMI. I adjusted in Kodi Audio settings the following
(Inside Kodi)
SYSTEM SETTINGS >> AUDIO OUTPUT
Number of channels: 5.1
Output Configuration: FIXED
Limit sampling rate: 192 kHz (You can try 96 kHz too)
OFF (NOT SELECTED): Stereo upmix, Enable audio DSP processing.
I also select Dolby digital and DTS capable devices
Kodi default for Audio output configuration was "Optimized", and I didn't get sound, after change to "fixed" I could get audio for movies with Dolby digital and DTS audio tracks. Try to see if can work for you too

I have exactly the same experience like judoka333 with the missing sound.
joliverio is using Kodi audio decoding to an TV. - If someone who has an AVR will use passthrough, there will be no sound with the Zidoo Kodi version.
With Kodi audio decoding you will get only Stereo PCM, with a direct connection to an TV it is sufficient.
@futeko.com: Please, if you recommend a FW and you write "...and it seems to run well. " I expect that you have also tested it with an AVR or write how you tested it. You wrote: "Uninstall pre-installed Kodi first... " this mean all settings are lost and the complete effort to install and test the Zidoo version was a waste of time.
I would not recommend Zidoo Kodi with H8 with an AVR and passthrough! So we have to wait for the next Himedia FW.
