Title: Q5 4K3D DISCONTINUED by Himedia/HiSilicon
Post by: futeko.com on January 14, 2016, 01:05:48 PM
It is with much disappointment that we have to report that Himedia have discontinued Q5 4K3D.

We were informed of the news late last week with it running contrary to what we had been previously told. The delay in us making a public statement about it was to give Himedia a chance to issue their own / reconsider.

The decision has been prompted by HiSilicon not wishing to continue production of the HiSilicon Hi3798C chipset.

It seems nonsensical to us to discontinue Q5 4K3D when it has become established as the best option for high-end video via Android, but it's not our decision.

Q10 4K3D sales will continue until Himedia run out of stock. We will have more Q10 4K3D next week.

I would speculate that this decision during CES was due to the very positive feedback received about the new V200 Himedia/HiSilicon products launching in April. Hopefully it's an indication that these products will be outstanding.

However, nobody knows for sure what the new HiSilicon products will be like at launch. Based on almost every other product ever it's unlikely they will be the perfect finished article at launch. For this reason, if you want a product with nearly 2 years firmware development behind it that works great now for 3D/7.1 then you may want to buy a Q10 4K3D whilst you can. They won't be around for much longer.

Himedia will continue to support Q5/Q10 4K3D as evidenced by the new firmware last week.

Will V200 Himedia/HiSilicon support Kodi or not?

Will developers publics updates for Q10 4K3D after the v200 is out?

Boring. Q5/Q10 both support Kodi. The new versions will also support Kodi. Certainly via a wrapper solution (which is better in many ways because you get all chipset features from Kodi) and also hopefully natively. The GPU used (Mali-720) is quite mainstream so I would expect Kodi devs to be looking at how to implement support. It's not all about Himedia / HiSilicon with these things, Kodi also have a role to play. There is recent contact between Kodi devs and Himedia so chances of native support are fairly high.

I am sure there will be more updates.

Q5/Q10 were not just released as the international products we sell, they were also released in Chinese versions. Basic firmware is the same, but the key difference is that the Chinese hardware sold in huge numbers. Himedia are not your usual Chinese factory pushing out new products every month based on every new chipset, they are a very large serious company who are massive (particularly in China) because they offer good support. I'd expect at least another year of updates for Q5/Q10.
