Hi futeko.com,

I am happy that HiMedia provide a new FW, but can you please kindly think about using a faster hoster for the update files than mediafire?
The download speed is only 22,7 KB/s (I have an 120 MBit/s internet access.) and it will take more than 7 hours to download the file. >:(

Hi,

I started to test firmware 1.0.9 yesterday. Overall I am quite happy with it so far. The status/notification + navigation bar is back. That is already a huge improvement.

What is still problematic is the internal storage reserved for the system & apps (the default location) which is still limited to 2GB. If you install new applications the message about not enough storage still appears - although there would be enough on the general flash memory. So the "system partition" seems to be too small. And some apps (e.g. all system apps, Google drive...) cannot be moved to the SD (the "general flash memory"). Some weeks ago I got the message from Himedia that this would be solved in the new firmware, apparently it isn't.

Cheers,
Flo

@HDMediaplayer
there must be something wrong with your internet/provider connection
when downloading the update.zip.

With pure Chrome I got 1.5 MByte/sec (one download-slot)
With JDownloader I got 9 MByte/sec (7 download slots)

@futeko:

1. why is it Kodi "15.2 RC"? The official Kodi 15.2 is an the market since weeks

2. Which acceleration settings should be activated in Kodi settings:

libstagefright
MediaCodec
rockchipcodec
rockchipcodec23976

Only one of them or all?

With rockchipcodec23976 activated only, I got heavy stuttering with 23.976 fps movies.

@futeko:
with all 4 codecs activated a full-hd movie with 23.976fps plays well and smooth.
audio passthrough (DTS) works also without stuttering

I would like to know what are the differences between the 4 codecs anyway to choose the optimal configuration.

The problem switching my TV to black, when Kodi is started and the H8 is configured to be at 4K resolution,
is solved now :-)

I will test videos with 4K further.

Hi RnBADBoY and pepe,

thank you for your feedback.
I tried also JDownloader, I got also only 56KB/s (4 download slots).
I don't have a Mediafire Premium account! When I download from other host's I reach 14.6 MByte/s!
For me it looks like a Free-User speed limitation from Mediafire.
RnBADBoY and pepe do you have Premium accounts?

no, I do not have a Mediafire premium account!

I am even not registered at Mediafire at all.

Perhaps there are different speed slots over the day for free users at Mediafire?

The 10MByte/sec I got today at 12:00 CET

What with Miracast apk? I don't see it. In Q10 its working both on iOS and Android devices.
What with H8?

A few issues I've noticed with the new firmware:
1: very annoyingly, at the end of playing a dvd ISO I now get a playback error message and Kodi then shuts down. This didn't happen with the old firmware.
2: I'm struggling to get Kodi to start up automatically when the box is switched on, this wasn't an issue before the upgrade. I've clicked "default start" for Kodi in "my apps".
3: all of my video files with non-hd audio remain out of sync by 250ms (which I believe is fairly common witty Kodi?); and the majority of my video files with hd-audio (via hdml to amp) remain out at lesser amounts (although, I believe that the sync delay remains constant over the course of the film).

+1 for same problem

After some confusing emails from Himedia, I got the following answer:
"The design for the H8(allocating 2GB for system partrition)is already done and can not be changed. Let's say, this setting is like the DNA of H8. So we could make any more change. But for the later model(new model), we might consider allocating a bigger system partrition."

So it looks like we have to live with the small system partition. :(

the new firmware is pretty good. I was wondering if our administrator (or anyone who is able to), could provide us a link to download, only the kodi version who comes with this firmware.

Thanks in advance

to 2. It seems "default start" can not be activated in 1.0.9 for me too.
to 3. Is it possible that you adjusted a fixed 250ms in the 1.0.7 Kodi version and this setting is still active?
After some quick tests I found no 2D-Full-HD-MKV video which is AV asynch with the new FW with Kodi.
Actually I would say that the 1.0.9 is a real improvement for 2D-Full-HD-MKVs.

The AV-Synch problem seems solved with the 1.0.9, but 60% of my untouched 3D-ISOs play not smooth and very rarely show some blocking artefacts with Kodi.
In the old 1.0.7 these videos plays smooth but the audio run away. It seems to me HiMedia "solve" the AV-Synch bug in the 1.0.9 by modifying the video replay speed on-the-fly or skipping some video frames and this causes the movements in the video not looking smooth if the bitrate is high.

In the settings is now Bluetooth to find. Is this a mistake? The H8 Octacore has no Bluetooth.
Or was now a support for a USB Bluetooth adapter installed in the new firmware?

W've had several reports of Kodi crashing and it is something to do with how these decoders interact. Himedia have been informed and are looking at it.

At the moment I'm not sure which should ideally be on. In this thread there are conflicting reports.

I don't have problems with KODI as long as I only use the libstagefright and rockchipcodec. I only wanted to report the issue...

I can view all kinds of Videos with this settings and The box an KODI seems to be faster with 1.0.9 :-)

I update my H8 yesterday with 1.0.9 firmware and now I am using it. So far I can have the following comments:

1. I am a "simple" user, my H8 is connected into a full HD TV through the HDMI cable. Before I was getting the black screen issue in firmware 1.0.7, that means suddenly the image goes black for a few seconds, sound keep on, and image goes back and movie keep playing. Now with 1.0.9 this black screen problem reduced a lot, much better, but still have randomly.
2. I made a firmware upgrade using the reset buttom, all my installed apps were removed (Normal, I know that), but Kodi keep all the previous settings (I tough Kodi will also have a fresh start, but it was not the case, all settings I did before is kept with new firmware)
3. I have sound sync problem, I always need to advance the sound around 300 ms using Kodi in firmware 1.0.7. With firmware 1.0.9 I get the same behavior, nothing change, I still need to adjust sound +300 ms to get in sync with image. Because the audio delay is fixed I still can watch the movies properly, but need to make this adjustment for every movie I watch
4. Playability seems improved, all files I tried so far plays smoothly.
5. I also have a Q5 (dual core), playability is much better in H8 but picture quality is lower,  the image is pale in H8

In overall I am happy with my H8, in my opinion the biggest blame for H8 is related with Rockchip chipset, Rockchip support seems awful and slow, I can say that because do not have any player with RK3368 chipset that is going very well, all of them have issues, Himedia is still my choice for Android boxes but surely rockchip is out of my wishlist forever.

Once I have more comments to do, I will update my post

1 and 3, I will report back to Himedia.

2, you can reset all Kodi settings by (in Android) going Settings - More - Apps - Kodi - CLEAR DATA.

Glad playback has improved. Himedia will continue to work to improve it.

Hi,

I do have 250ms audio offset set in Kodi so that my 500 or so sd movies plus the majority of my to shows play in sync. Unfortunately, as stated, all DVD iso files now cause Kodi to shut down at the end of playing (this is by far the biggest issue I have with this firmware).

For my hd videos, the offset varies (they aren't all -250ms to account for the preset audio offset). I haven't noticed any major change  here from the previous firmware.

Sadly I think I'm at the stage where in going to have to revert to the old firmware. Although there are some obvious improvements, Kodi is crashing at the end of each tv episode (DVD iso) that my children are watching. For peppa pig (5 min episodes), this is very annoying  ;)

I have tried disabling and various combinations; no joy. The error and crash doesn't happen until the end of a video, so with films I guess I could press stop when the credits start to roll. Its tv episodes which are the problem. This is a pretty major backwards step with the firmware!

Title: Re: HIMEDIA H8 OCTA. 7-JAN-2016. FIRMWARE HMD-1.0.9 FUTEKO-EN (12-JAN-2016 RELEASE)
Post by: joliverio on January 18, 2016, 06:37:32 AM

By the way, mostly of my files are MKV sizes from 800 Mb to 9GB, and I am not having any Image problem or crashes under Kodi, but as I said I need to adjust the audio to +300ms to get in sync

@joliverio: About your item 5 (pale picture). Have you tried to reduce the brightness of the picture in the standard android settings? This improved the picture quality for me tremendously.

I agree with that.

No answer from Himedia yet but that is the best setup we've found in testing.

Thanks for your advice, I decrease the brightness (2 levels down) as you said and I agree with you, picture looks much better now! Cheers  8)

hdmkv, thank you for your recommendation.

This firmware is a big improvement.
I feel the same and I hope HiMedia further improve the FW (3D-ISO smoothness and artefacts, 23.976, Fast-Forward/Backward, time jumps, etc.).

I seem to be the only one unhappy with the new firmware. Can I just check, is anyone else having an issue with sd (ie DVD) ISOs?  If not, perhaps I'll try reinstalling the firmware. All my mkvs are ok, so it's definitely an ISO issue.

Thanks

@kevsfx: I never tried SD (DVD) ISOs (I do not have one of them) with 1.0.9. So it is possible that there is an issue with that.
I tried a few DVDs in Folder-Structures with 1.0.7 and only 50% of them was playable, but this is a different story. (Not re-tested in 1.0.9 because DVD-Folder-Play has no priority for me.)

If the people say the FW is an improvement it does not mean it is bug free or every feature exist and work satisfactory.
It only mean the "special" way the people use it and the "special" files they play are OK and personally I screw down my expectations in this early FW phase.
Also the 1.0.9 has bugs and has a lot of missing/not working media-player features which will hopefully fixed/enhanced by HiMedia in the future.
But for this it is necessary that every user who notice a problem report it like you did it, with the things which are important for you.
Can be in some month it is also important for others and they can be happy if you already mentioned it and it is fixed. (That is how community works:-)
Personally I prefer to open a new thread per problem with an expressive title instead of posting it into one huge common thread which will become confusing if it is growing and growing. This brings an easier overview also for others and most important for futeko who report it to HiMedia.

Maybe I missed if this was mentioned, but how can the bottom nav/controls (meant for tablets) be permanently disabled in the Android launcher/UI? Seems this firmware introduced it.

It can't be permanently disabled.

Behaviour at the moment is that it can be manually hidden by clicking the bar, and for some apps (notably Kodi and Youtube when playing video) it hides automatically.

I've discussed my preference for having an option in settings to control behaviour and my preference for auto-hide or disabled with Himedia and I will continue to try and push them in that direction.

That would be good, thanks. The bar wasn't there before this firmware. Makes sense for a tablet, not a media player, and I couldn't hide it w/the remote; had to plug in a keyboard/mouse combo. Thankfully, as you noted, it auto-hides when Kodi is launched.

Hi Folks!
...and some more Feedback for Firmware 1.0.9:

Cons:
- 24p Playback does not work. No matter if it is activated or deactivated, 24p Material is always played with 50 Hz
- The black Level with the original Video Setting is really bad. You need to reduce the brightness for at least 2 steps, to acchieve an acceptabe "blackness"
- The Audio- and The Subtitle-Buttons from the remote Controll do not work during playback

Pros:
- not shure if this was already confirmed: Dolby ATMOS works when playing from Kodi with HDMI passthrough

And finally one Question: I know from the Q10 4k3D that a Himedia Wrapper is needed to allow Kodi using the Hardware of thee Q10 for Video Processing. No Wrappen in the H8 FW 1.0.9? Is this not needed for the H8??

Kind Regards

yes that's right ..the black level with the original video setting is really bad.
I have a 4K projector from Sony and am having difficulty with the contrast and brightness ... please slipstreams the parameter "Contrast and" brightness "in the player a ..
Otherwise, the firmware with few flaws to the 70%, ok
thank you
Please include the Parameter..1.Contrast and brightness in a player bar.

Hi!

I assume the old Kodi Version (15RC2) embeded in FW 1.0.9 was somehow "modified/optimised" for best performance with the H8 Octa and its firmware, correct?

Now that Kodi 16 is out i ask myself:
1) Will there be a new firmware with Kodi 16?
2) What would happen if i update to Kodi 16 manually from FW 1.0.9? Is it possible to uninstal the embedded Kodi 15RC2 and then update to Kodi 16 from a USB stick? Has anybody already done so??

Kind Regards

1. Yes. No precise timetable but probably quite soon.

2. It is possible to uninstall pre-installed Kodi and install any other version (either through Play Store or downloading from Kodi website). If you install Kodi 16 you'll lose 7.1 HD-Audio, 3D ISO, and some performance, but it will run perfectly well.

I just joined so HI 5... eeee, HI 8 ;) to every one here  :) And please, don't kill the Newbie.

It might be a silly question but where in Android installed in H8 Octa do I find option to allow install .apk from other sources than Play Store? Because all installs from usb drive failed so far. I don't see security settings in Android options. I even opened Developer options but no sign of Security settings.

Furthermore, after reading your Forum I will install 1.0.9 Futeko firmware instead of the one I have now HMD-1.0.9 2016-01-07.100054 from HI media site. Because, as I understand, it has been modified is some way? But please correct me if I'm wrong.  :)

By the way, I got my H8 Octa beginning of  December and I'm still struggling with sound issues;  very loud buzzing when I start DTS or Dolby Digital movie which goes away after second or 2 as well as sound and video getting out of sync during the movie. Pause and Play helps for a while. Al this on Kodi 15.2 final version.

I tried different setting in Kodi and even upgraded it Kodi 16 from Play Store but now I lost any Pass-through capabilities. It is just buzzing, swooshing or hissing sound when I start to play a video. This sound is similar to sound you get when you test your speakers. It comes and goes. After switching off and on my Harman Kardon BDS880, while I play DTS movie sound fails down and comes back each 2 or 3 seconds.

I'm writing all this because I see a lot of people struggling with sound issues and maybe some one has similar configuration as mine. Sharing knowledge is power.  :)

Anyway, I'm happy that Futeko forum offers some support. It's a pitty that it took me a while to get here.

Cheers

From home screen go Media Center. Navigate to the location of the .apk file and then select App. You can also install apks using any file browser by just selecting them.

There is a virtual keyboard with firmware 1.0.9. It should work without any need to change anything.

How did you install the firmware? If it wasn't by the reset button full reinstall method we describe in our firmware thread then I am sure doing a full re-install would fix your problem.

Alternatively, if you go Settings - More - Language & input then under 'Keyboard & input methods', 'Current keyboard' should be 'English (US) - Android Keyboard (AOSP)' and 'Android Keyboard (AOSP)' should be 'English (US)'. Those are the default settings and 100% work.

Do NOT install Standard Kodi, as you already did you Kodi is messed up already. Make a fresh install (fresh install using the reset key on the back) using the firmware 1.0.9. All instructions are already here in this Forum

I can see the keyboard setting.. its there.. but everytime i click the text box, the keyboard wont open.. One more thing, i already using kodi isenguard15.2 and there is kodi jarvis 16 outhere.. How can i update my kodi from isenguard to jarvis ??  :-\ :-\

BTW, my nexflix already work like it should be after upgrading firmware.. Thank you very much ..  ;D ;D

So, now, what should i do to fix that situation  ??   :'(

Thanks ..

So, i have reupdate the firmware using the method that comes with the firmware and YES, there is a virtual keyboard if updating using suggested method.. Thanks a lot..

Now, and am trying to install "iflix" using the new firmware -- > will update you guys later on..

How can i updgrading my kodi from isenguard to jarvis ??

Thanks..

Hi to all ..

Hi to all..

You can install any version of Kodi on H8 but with any version except the pre-installed one you'll lose 3D-ISO, 7.1 Audio, and some decoding performance.

If you do want to install 16.0 then you can do it either through Play Store or the Kodi site: https://kodi.tv/download/

This apk: http://mirrors.kodi.tv/releases/android/arm/kodi-16.0-Jarvis-armeabi-v7a.apk

HiMedia will release a new firmware soon with Kodi updated to 16.0 final.

Thanks.

By playing a 3D-ISO or a video with a 7.1 Audio soundtrack. This is a great page for samples: http://kodi.wiki/view/Samples#HD_Audio_Test_Clips

Or course, if you aren't using the box for 3D-ISO or 7.1 audio then losing them in the official Kodi isn't really an issue.

And one more general question: I know from my Q10 4k3D that a additional WRAPPER is needede to use the Himedia Player when playing from Kodi.

Is such a Wrapper not needed for the H8? And Why?? What is the difference between the Q10 and the H8 related to the Wrapper??

The custom version of Kodi pre-installed on H8 does kind of use a wrapper, but it's so tightly integrated into Kodi that you don't notice. So the 'wrapper', which is using Rockchip code to play media, plays media in the background with the full Kodi GUI on top. It's seamless and is, in effect, the same as using Kodi's internal player.

Q10/Q5 launch an external player from Kodi so you lose the Kodi GUI whilst playing files.

The H8 solution is better. More elegant.

The Q5/Q10 solution has the advantage that the wrapper can be applied to any version of Kodi, so there's no waiting for firmware updates to get latest version of Kodi.

i guess this integrated wrapper approach is one of the reasons it takes so long to release the new FW with Kodi 16.0, right?

It's a combination of the custom Kodi and waiting for base firmware updates from Rockchip.

Do you have an estimation for the next FW release date?
The actual one is more then 2 month old, if I take the Chinese-new-Year into account and the H8 is still not fully usable with Audio in "passthrough".

No custom HiMedia version of 16 yet. It will come in next firmware. When that will be we do not know, we wait for HiMedia.

You can install any version of Kodi but will lose 7.1 audio, 3D, and some performance.

Unfortunately Kodi is fighting against chipset manufacturers, Rockchip included, and are not supporting RK3368 chipset for example. It needs the manufacturers (Himedia/Rockchip) to customize Kodi to make fully workable. The standard Kodi do not work fully with H8 specially for Audio and BD playability. The only Custom Kodi that can work with H8 is from Zidoo (Kodi version 16) however Zidoo Kodi also have some bugs and do not work properly. So far, we are empty handed in terms of using the latest Kodi. I hope Himedia and Rockchip to push themselves to make a later version compatible with H8!

I'm lucky. I do not need 7.1 audio or 4k or BD.

mkv works fine with the playstore kodi :-)

It would be nice to have a plugin system for chipset related staff in kodi - do you know any alternatives to kodi?

What about "jerking" of sound vs video? I have this problem while using pass-through sound option.

I need 5.1 audio, no 4k. BD? Sorry mate, you lost me? What does it stands for?  ???

@futeko.com: When will be the 1.1.1 "Futeko-Release" with Change-log ready?
Does the 1.1.1 include any bug-fix for the heavy bugs like "AV-Asynch in passthrough with AVR with 50% of movies"?

@all: Did someone ask Himedia for the Change-log for the European FW 1.1.1 by email?

Thank you Timo, I have the same feeling as you.
Today I got the same short and unsatisfactory answer from Himedia as you.
I have asked back if this wifi bug is the only thing what is enhanced, improved or fixed in two firmware revisions. - Now I'm waiting for the answer.

It seems all the heavy bugs which make the H8 octa useless for the users are not fixed!?
Half of time I have to use my old player.

I am very disappointed about Himedia's effort to fix the known bugs, e.g.:
Kodi: 2D-MKVs play not smooth and/or are AV asynch with AVR and passthrough.
Kodi: 3D-ISOs play not smooth and blocking artefacts
Kodi: Time jump / time skipping crash very often
Kodi: 3D-BD-ISO movies are not continued at last stopped position
Kodi: Fast- Forward/-Rewind do not work sufficiently
Non QWERTY style USB keyboards not natively supported

From firmware 1.0.9 to 1.1.1 are two releases and the only thing what is enhanced, improved or fixed is a seldom wifi bug???  >:(
After more than 7 month the main functions of a media player still does not work! :o

No jerking, but I only use 2.0 Sound - BD = blueraydisc.
I think 1.1.1 is more stable, runnig standard KODI 16.1 for watching 2d mkv, avis and mp3 is ok.
