If all the display lights are turned on, when you disconnect and reconnect the power cord,
try touching the first key at the top right, the lights go out and only the stand-by key remains.
Now you can even turn on with the remote control.
Otherwise they sometimes go out even after 8-10 minutes.
This procedure worked for me, then I don't know if there are other causes that don't allow you to do it.

Speaking of the front panel, is there any way to have the clock on even when the box is "turned off"?  I use the box as my clock for my living room but I don't like to keep it running all the time due to wear and tear concerns.

I don't know how to answer this question.
For my personal choice I keep everything off also the frontal symbol, with a piece of adhesive tape, in the home theater environment I do not want lights that can disturb the view of the screen.

It will not turn off the power LED. That is what the tape is for.

Just to clarify, I do not want the clock off, I want it on all the time even when the power is "off" with just the red light on in the right corner.
