Title: Firmware upgrade - recovery mode vs settings menu
Post by: waeguk on November 24, 2015, 10:02:17 PM
There are 2 ways to upgrade firmware according to http://himediatech.com/support.htm

Is there a difference to the results? It's obvious the 2nd option is easier and less fuss, isn't it?

The menu method retains user data and settings but can sometimes result in app problems because the updated apps might not like the old user data/settings.

We would always recommend a clean install (wipes all data) using the restore button method.

Kodi data can be backed up easily using this add-on: http://kodi.wiki/view/Add-on:Backup

This is what i did.

I hope this does not mean there will be some problems with the new kodi restored to previous backup

This is what i did.

  • I did upgrade using the 2nd option (via settings menu).
  • Backup to usb drive via kodi backup addon
  • Upgrade using the 1st option via recovery mode
  • Once restarted, restore kodi via kodi addon
  • Popup warning says "This version of Kodi is different than the one used to create the archive. Would you like to continue?"

I hope this does not mean there will be some problems with the new kodi restored to previous backup

It shouldn't cause any problems.
