23.976 is played as 24p in both Kodi and Himediaplayer. The new firmware enables auto switching between 24/50/60Hz.

I am awaiting a detailed changelog from Himedia. It's the same firmware as is discussed in this thread, so some more info here: http://www.futeko.com/newforum/index.php?topic=382.0

The download on the Himedia site is the raw 'update.zip' file. We have placed that file inside a .zip archive and packaged it with a readme.txt file giving changelog and installation instructions.

That our package is smaller must be due to better compression on our archive. It's exactly the same firmware.

You can use the Zidoo version of Kodi.

It seems they are using a later Kodi in their most recent firmware.

+1. Just download Zidoo's latest firmware, unzip, then copy the Kodi APK file to a USB stick, plug into H8 and install. I'd clear data and uninstall the HiMedia version first though on H8.

Installed Zidoo version of Kodi and tested some movies.
Experiencing bunch of drop frames and stuttering.
Clean install firmware HMD-1.0.7 (FINAL) FUTEKO-EN fixed this.

I also noticed that Mx player says now HW not supported.
Only HW+ and SW, so no DTS/AC3 sound.
In previous firmware was working fine.

Yep, these video & playback artifacts are worse on Zidoo X6 as well. Where X6 is better (for now) is ability to play up to 120Mbps bitrate files w/o stutters; H8 can manage around 70Mbps (although that's good enough for any 1:1 BD rip).

downloaded zidoo x6 version of kodi 15.2. For some reason clicking around on the home screen of confluence i am finding a delay in the clicking sound. I did not have this issue before. I know this is very minor but i am more curious if anyone else is experiencing this as well.

ALso i was wondering why doesn't homed push their firmware upgrades through the online function in settings? It was a mission to figure out how to update firmware.

sounds like a hw-problem.  I use also fw 107 with the Zidoo X6 Kodi-version and have no such problems you described.

my only problem at the moment is:

1. I use a 4K TV (LG 79UF8609)
2. if the H8 is set to 2160@60 booting to the Android-GUI is ok.
3. a first start of Kodi then results in a black screen, TV says no input signal after a few seconds.
4. switching off and switching on again the TV brings the started Kodi-Gui back. As an alternative
I can change the resolution with the H8-remote -> Kodi-gui appears, TV and H8 are in sync
5. If the H8 is configured other then 2160@xx (1080/720/..) then everything is fine, the Kodi-GUI
appears at once. It is not a matter of the fps, but of the 4K-resolution.
6. This behaviour is with the original Kodi from fw 107 (10-NOV-2015) and the Zidoo X6-Kodi
7. With fw 106 and before (older Kodi versions) this behaviour was not present.

Any advice?

P.

Experiencing bunch of random reboots, crash, freeze when trying to play some movies(same behaviour in Android and Kodi).
They play fine about 30 sec then box reboot or freeze.
Also installing apps in android make the box reboot instantly.
MX Player says HW not supported.
So i put again H8 on sleep and power on my Q5 4K3D.
Till next firmware...

That is very untypical H8 behaviour.

If you're getting crashing, freezing, rebooting it sounds like a hardware problem. I suggest contacting your retailer (if that's us: mail@futeko.com) for a replacement.

Nobody else is experiencing the hardware problems you describe.

I think you have a faulty box and should get it exchanged.

Not sure about HW support in MX player, but with 1.0.7 FINAL there's not much reason to use MX Player. Just use Kodi.

Your Box is the H8 Quad-core because the firmware of the H8 Octa-Core will not function. The processors are from different manufacturers.

If I am wrong please corrected me.

Is this ok, or still a hardware problem?

No you cannot install firmware from our site on that box. That is a product, usually called H7 (http://item.jd.com/1670880.html), that is sold only in Asia. It has different specs (RAM/flash and other) to our European/International H8.

You're actually really lucky that installing the firmware didn't brick the box permanently. I suggest installing the correct firmware for that box (contact your reseller). You won't be able to fix the problems you're finding with our H8 firmware installed on the wrong hardware.

My opinion is that the succession of problems you've encountered with your H8 (I think not bought from us) mean that it has a hardware problem. I suggest returning it for exchange to your retailer.

Nobody else has the volume of problems you're having. There is no no need to alter hardware acceleration options in Kodi on H8 for instance, it should just work.

What stage are the guys deleloping the Shield at with DTS-HD and 3D.? I only ask as they are the reasons I bought this box over others..

I dont know any issues with 3D.. But at DTS-HD it works - but not with Kodi yet. But Kodi Developer already said, that it will be implemented in Kodi 17 - Kodi 16 is already on feature stop. Suprisingly - I only have one DTS-HD File yet - It was working with Kodi 16 Beta 2 - Something more important for me is the "overall" performance. Autoframe Rate works flawless out of box and the system runs like on ecstasy.. I have a dozen of different files with different codecs.. The H8 still has trouble with some files which results in: not played or problems in forwarding/skipping/stutter while playing.. The shield plays everything super smooth. I didnt experienced any "lag" yet.. The X1 SoC is so awesome... And Netflix with 4K support! The Shield is the device I wished the H8 would be...

I've just had another look at the shield, I've been keeping an eye on the development as it looks like a nice little unit..... From what I can see it does NOT support 3D at present. Plus no DTS-HD or TrueHD in Kodi which is a deal breaker for me.... Maybe in the future, although they're talking about implementation in Kodi 17 so I'm guessing a year away for a stable release with 3D and HD audio.. Which is a shame, although hopefull the price will come down a bit by then..

Shield TV can presently decode to lossless PCM from Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD MA (with Kodi 16). With Kodi 17, likely out January 2016, it will bitstream/passthrough as well.

As for frame-packed 3D, requested by many (including yours truly) here (https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/883060/shield-android-tv/shield-android-tv-feature-request-2-0-/), but nVidia hasn't said anything yet.

Yes if you need 3D and TrueHD/DTS-HD by now you will be already better on H8.. But both are features which I dont need actually.. As Kodi 16 Jarvis is already in Beta 2 stage I think we can expect first Kodi 17 Alphas in January/February... For me overall performance and codec support is more important and in these terms the shield is really superior - So it depends all on your needs

Hi, I'm really new with this.
I bought h8, and it has problems, kodi audio, Netflix and clock. I now installed this firmware and clock still reset anytime I turn off the device (with his original controller). Now Netflix works, but audio is not synced. I haven't tried kodi. Can you tell me if clock problem can be a software problem? And what about Netflix? If this is not the right place, sorry.
Thanks

Hello everyone , I ask help ... I mounted the new firmware , but many iso DVD ( VOB format) are not executed. All are created with the correct structure " VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS " but do not work ..or some better and others do not ... if you look at them from a PC with VLC reads everything correctly . If I run with the player of the H8 not run " error code__ " .
If anyone can help me thank you very much ... Ps sorry my English use a translator .

I answered the clock question in the thread you created.

When you updated the firmware did you update using the menu, or the reset button method (as described in the first post of our firmware thread)? If you used the menus please do it again the reset button method. I have no idea what firmware was originally installed on the box (it doesn't sound like you bought it from us) so it's definitely better to do a full clean firmware (wiping everything) reinstall using reset button. I suspect a full reinstall will fix both clock and sync problems.

I suspect the box didn't update, and instead you've done a factory reset.

Please try update again. 'update.zip' file should be extracted from our firmware archive. No renaming! After booting with reset button pressed the only thing you should see on screen is Android droid and progress bar. If it says 'erasing' then H8 has not recognised the update file and is doing a factory reset.

No, it definitely did the update, showed the android-symbol und "updating device" or something like that, but when it had finished, I got a chinese message (only thing i could read was "google" inside and two options to chose, and then another option menu, first choice chinese, 2nd one the 3d-Browser, I chose that one and that got me in the usual menu, but everything was chinese.

Anyway, meanwhile I managed to click myself through the chinese menus and found the language Menu to change it.

DefinitelyI got Build 142431 with a new Kodi with several new options in the Audio-passthrough, and this also seems to work, so i guess it did the update ... ;-)

Thanks anyway!

Hi there,

I've got my H8 from futeko last week and I have a couple of problems:

3D (frame-packed) ISO with HD audio:
- on LG 3D tv: audio&video out of sync :(
- on Epson 3D projector: "no signal" :(
(Tested with 6 different movies, same result)

4k 30fps, 4k@60fps demos:
http://bbb3d.renderfarming.net/download.html
Standard 2D, 3840x2160, 30fps (same with 60fps)
Result: huge lag, audio&video out of sync :(

Kodi: No HD audio, everything is decoded to PCM

How can I resolve these?
I bought the player to watch 3D ISOs and 4k videos, but neither of these are working. :/
(I use an Onkyo TX-NR636 receiver with the H8 and TV)

Hi James,

"Kodi: No HD audio, everything is decoded to PCM" -> You have to set the different audio formats which are supported by your AVR in the Kodi-Settings to "passtrough".

Your 3D-ISO problem is a problem you share with a lot of H8 customers in the actual FW version.
It seems only MortUK is the lucky one without this kind of problems.

If you read older post on this forum or other forums you will recognize it.

Futeko announced in the coming FW these problems will be fixed, but this new FW will also not have 23.976 Hz support, which is very important for Europe and USA customers because this is the main frequency for movies in this countries. We only can pray and hope that HiMedia together with the SoC manufacturer Rockchip will fix this also in the future, but this is not promised.

I have only a Full-HD Plasma, but as I remember I rarely read some complains about 4K from others. Actually 4K is not so common and so it seems there are problems too.

Sorry that I could only help on one topic.

Are you using Kodi?

Are you sure you bought the box from us and it has latest firmware? Your email/IP suggests you didn't. If you didn't (and it's no big problem) please install latest firmware first and re-test. Use the reset button method as detailed in the firmware thread on this forum.

3D definitely works using an Epson 3D projector. All the testing for this thread was done using an Epson 5025UB: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=221407

I will test one of those 2D samples later, but you shouldn't get 'huge lag'. Same with 3D. Plenty of people are using H8 to view 3D movies. If you are getting lag in Himediaplayer please use Kodi, it is optimised for H8 and performs better than Himediaplayer in most circumstances.

I think we need to establish firmware version first before anything else. Please reply regarding that.

I wouldn't call this a 'fix' because it was never part of the original specification and neither us or Himedia have ever claimed H8 will support 23.976.

Himedia appreciate that customers want 23.976 support but whether it happens or not will depend on Rockchip implementing it.

For those people reading this and wondering what is this terrible 23.976 problem, it's a single repeated frame every 41 seconds to compensate for movies being filmed at 23.976fps whereas TVs usually display at 24/50/60Hz. It's a 'problem' that gets talked about on technical forums but most people wouldn't otherwise be aware it exists. It's also a 'problem' that exists in almost all other Android boxes and media players.

There's a better chance of 23.976 being implemented in H8 than other RK3368 products, that is for certain. For example, the much lauded Himedia Q5 got native 23.976 about 6 months after European release. Like I say, Himedia are aware and will do what they can.

I just tested http://distribution.bbb3d.renderfarming.net/video/mp4/bbb_sunflower_2160p_30fps_normal.mp4 from the link you gave and it played flawlessly with no lag in both himediaplayer and kodi.

Just to add that anyone having these bad audio/subtitle sync problems should ensure that they are running the latest firmware, installed using reset button method.

I've been testing and I really can't replicate the problems. And, we've sold quite a lot of H8 now and the number getting these big problems are minimal.

Thank you for the technical description (but you have to throw away, not repeat one frame).
But it is not only a technical problem for nerds.
What happens for most of the people in real life is a noticeable micro-stutter every ~42 seconds.
I only know people who recognize this micro-stutter and for them it is a nuisance.
Personally nobody told me he/she did not notice it and it doesn't matter.

I am happy that Himedia is aware that this is a problem.
And I wrote: "We only can pray and hope that HiMedia together with the SoC manufacturer Rockchip will fix this also in the future, but this is not promised."
I called it a fix because from an expensive media player I expect that after some month it can play the most common BluRay frame-rate in the world!
Which frame-rate have the Chinese cinema movies/BluRays (23.976!?), I did not understand that this has not a high priority for Chinese manufacturers?
Multi Frame-rate support is also a basic like AV synch...

What have to be said also is that you give a good support at futeko.com and that this is something special.
You did not only sell things and do not care after selling. That was the reason why I bought at futeko.com. - Thank you.

I run the latest FW and I used the reset button method (show the androide mascot during installation) and I have massive AV synch problems with 2D-MKVs and 3D-ISOs and blocking artefacts with some 3D-ISOs (in Kodi and HiMedia player) and I did it twice because after first installation I had chosen the wrong launcher (not the 3D).

I hope there is one thing we can agree on:

23.976 is an inconvenient number of frames per second.

24fps / 25fps / 30fps would have been better.

It comes from American standard NTSC TV.

More 23.976 info to be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24p#23.976p

Noticed ever since installed latest firmware, the wifi speed gets worse and its not due to my home wifi, as i compare it with other media players side by side.

Even downloading from play store is crawling.

Each time i factory reset, the speed is back to good, then after an indefinite time, it crawls ... happens to media center, youtube, etc.

Newbie Question: Can you install the firmware 1.0.7 upgrade using a method that does NOT wipe out all of the other software and apps and settings??

I read elsewhere in a forum that you could using the following:
Method 1. An update using this method will update the operating system but leave all apps and data intact.

1. Copy update.zip to the root of a USB pen drive.
2. Insert the USB pen drive into any USB port of the H8.
3. Navigate to Settings - Upgrade - Local Upgrade. Choose the USB device containing the update archive.
4. The box will reboot and you will be taken to the Android update screen. DO NOT TURN OFF POWER OR INTERRUPT THE UPDATE.
5. The box will reboot again when the update is complete. Check the version number using Settings - About.

Will this work for HMD-1.0.7??

Giving up on USB (and the unknown spec on how they should be formatted), I dropped the zip file onto an SD card and the system then recognized the update. Once the update was complete, I was pleased to find the UI was updated.

Now, how to get 2TB of movies recognized while on an HFS+ formatted (Mac) external drive. I'd rather not spend 6 hours moving my archive off the drive just to format it (to a still unknown format) just to place everything back on it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is Droid not based on Linux... and therefore more accepting of Mac volumes?

Thanks.

H8 (and Android generally) doesn't support HFS+ format drives.

If you could root H8 you could install Paragon, which would give you HFS+ access, but I have no idea how to root H8..

I am sorry to report that it will be after New Year.

Himedia feel (correctly in my opinion) that it would be counter-productive at this stage to release a firmware that users will find unsatisfactory. So I wait, we all wait.

Hi, is there a himedia forum?

Yes, a massively popular one, but it's in Chinese. It can be read using Google Translate or similar.

Please don't try and install firmware meant for China hardware. It probably won't work and if you do somehow force install it is likely to brick your box.

Yes if colour depth is 8bit. No if it's 10 or 12bit.

I'd recommend wired ethernet rather than wi-fi.

I`m not interested in using wifi. It`s a hardware or software problem ? Most of 2160p that i downloded are 10bit.  :(

RK3368 hardware supports 8bit colour max.

The upcoming (April) HiSilicon Hi3798CV200 based Himedia products will support 10bit.

We wait for it too. I will get more info out of Himedia this week and report back here. Communication with Himedia has been more difficult this week because several of their key staff were at Las Vegas CES.

It's on its way. HiMedia won't give us a date though.
