Hi guys,
The guys over at Zidoo have released a custom version of Kodi 15.2 (Final) for the Rockchip 3368 (Which the Himedia H8 is based). It's actually for the Ziddo X6 Pro box (Main competitor to the Himedia H8)
I've just installed it on my Himedia H8 and so far it works considerably better than the version of Kodi that comes with the 1.0.7 Firmware... :) ;D
DTS-HD, TrueHD, DTS, Dolby Digital all pass through fine with no audio issues, They also pass in full 7.1.
PVR is back and working (With a few glitches but it's functional)
According to the Zidoo forum it can do frame packed 3D MVC although i haven't got anything to test it with on the H8.. 3D iso still pass through as SBS..
Here is a link to the file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1pwqjkjfksvgcka/kodi-X6.apk?dl=0
You'll need to uninstall your current version of Kodi before installing this version on your H8. (Make sure you back up your settings.).
I haven't extensively tested it yet but it looks good, the only issue i have is that it's not recognizing my movie library. (But i'm working on that)
I'd be interested in finding out anyone else views..... :D
Mort..
Edit... New version posted 02/12/2015 - https://www.dropbox.com/s/ap3k2hf3bf1oyo0/kodi-X6-25.apk?dl=0

-
Thank you Mort,
downloaded, will try that as well.
Very good news about PVR addons too!...:-)
-
Thanks. Downloading... will try as well. BTW, where in their forum did you find this? I only see the full firmware zips available. I assume the APK was in the zip?
-
I downloaded the full zip file then extracted the Kodi.apk from that...
-
Thanks Mort, I will try it tomorrow.
Especially 23.976 fps, audio passthrough and 3D are interesting...
Peter
-
Great stuff and thanks a lot :) Installed it and tried a couple of movies. 23.976 FPS works definitely better than using the RC version which was delivered as part of the 1.0.7 rom but I still see little jerking / the Himedia player still does a much better job in context of stuttering / jerking.
There is by the way also a new Himedia release: HMD-1.0.7 2015-11-10.142431

There is by the way also a new Himedia release: HMD-1.0.7 2015-11-10.142431
That's interesting, same firmware 1.0.7.. With a different build number.
Mort.
-
HMD-1.0.7 2015-11-10.142431 also includes a player/renderer for 23.976 and this one looks very good to me. Just test 2-3 videos and did not see any jerking / stuttering. Will do additional tests later today.
-
Edited. I see '1.0.7 MK2' is on the Himedia official site.
A bit like 1.0.6, which was also on Himedia site before becoming 1.0.7, '1.0.7 MK2' (HMD-1.0.7 2015-11-10.142431) will eventually be 1.0.8.
Without telling me(!) Himedia have put out a new 1.0.7, quite possibly to compete with Zidoo.
By all means install 1.0.7 MK2, but there are some bugs, 1.0.8 will be more a finished product.
-
I really have to say that this Kodi-Version MortUK has posted is a massive step to be the media player that I wanted, for the first time Kodi is useable. So I will test the "new" FW now!
Oh man, it were I haven't said this, with the new FW Kodi uses only a quarter of the complete screen and only appear in the left upper corner, any idea? The normal menu of the player is fullscreen!
-
Very good progress with this firmware by HiMedia. (http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=247537&pid=2160368#pid2160368)

So 3D iso work with the new firmware.?

I've just installed this firmware and I have to say WOW... It works really well... PVR appears to be fully working... As does 3D iso, DTS-HD, TrueHD etc...
http://www.himediatech.com/support.htm
I'm stil testing it but I may well be switching off my Rapberry Pi2 later today and using my H8 in stead.!!! :)
Futeko you should really consider posting this at the head of the forum.

Have to reconsider this... lot of random reboots.

Guys, agree this firmware is a big improvement, but let's not lose sight of critical fixes that are still needed...
There's still no 23.976 (so microstutters are noticeable), there's macroblocking in several 3D ISO's, some 3D ISO's have playback freezing after a couple mins of playback ('Avatar' 3D ISO), HD audio pops/crackles are present (and bad for AVR/speakers), and finally lip synch issues are present (especially when you skip ahead in video).

The lip sync is the only real problem for me... I have issues with my TV taking too long to switch frequencies so i stay in 60hz, Although a big part of that is because i use Kodi for TV watching through PVR, I haven't had any issues with freezing, I have to say i've never really noticed an issue with smoothness in 23.976 anyhow.. No pops of cradles in the audio either, So for my purposes it's an "almost" finished product...
I've used my H8 quite a bit with this new FW release and it's pretty solid to use... Much nicer than my Pi...
Mort..

Just curious if you're playing any 3D ISO's with HD audio? That's where you'll notice the issues with mostly.
-
Just curious if you're playing any 3D ISO's with HD audio? That's where you'll notice the issues with mostly.
I've tested a couple and have to say that I have vertically no issues with 3D iso and DTS-HD... With the exception of the audio sync that is, and that can be sorted within Kodi..
Watched the whole of Big Hero 6 tonight, 3D iso with DTS HD I heard 2 pops from on of the fear speakers half way through and that's it.... As I'm writing this I'm 20 mins into The Avengers - Age if Ultron, 3D iso DTS HD, I've had absolutely no issues... No video artefacts etc and it looks beautiful..
My TV doesn't show the difference between 24p and 23.976.. It just shows it as 24hz.. It's a 2012 LG and as far as I know it can handle both..
Mort,
-
The new Kodi can handle now 23.976 fps movies, (my LG notice it as 24 fps) and the stutters every few seconds,
when the old fw played it with 60fps, are gone. Maybe the 23.976fps movies are played with 24fps, because there are stutters every 42 seconds
or so. But my LG reports no difference between 24 and 23.976 fps.
But strangely not all of my 23.976 fps movies are detected correctly. Some were played with 60fps as before.
I cannot see any differences in the file/movie structure, as Mediainfo reports it. Some are HEVC/x265 coded, some AVC/x264,
with DTS or AC3. I cannot see any hint, what is the reason for this.
The weired audio effects with pasthrough are gone. But my receiver is able to handle DTS 5.1, but no DTS-HD 7.1.
A DTS-HD 7.1 track gives only distorsions/jam in the speakers, when Kodi is set to audio passthrough and 'DTS capable receiver' is selected,
but 'DTS-HD capable receiver' is NOT selected. Is this behaviour correct? Should Kodi remix a DTS-HD 7.1 track to PCM in this case?
And with the new FW my TV (LG 79UF8609) has problem to synchronize the HDMI-signal when Kodi starts ('No signal') Then I have
to switch the TV off and on again or change the H8-resolution with the H8-remote control. Then the Kodi gui appears correctly.
I haven't tested 3D ISO until now...
Peter

Those pops/crackles are bad for your speakers.
-
Ok, so I got hold of Avatar overnight and gave that try.... There are major issues playing it with regards to video.... I guess it depends on the video file....
I played Big Hero 6, Dispicable Me 2, Avengers Age of Ultron and Minions.... All in 3D iso with DTS HD audio with no problems...

Yep. Another one that has issues is 'Gravity' 3D. I have over 200 3D rips & haven't tried them all obviously, but macroblocking, video freezing & HD audio popping/cracking needs to be fixed, stabilized. Also affects Zidoo's X6 player.

"Ant Man" also has issues, plays fine in Himedia's internal player though...

It should be pretty clear what the ad say and what the machine/box cant, you only have to read treads here and on Kodi, I know that you follow treads on both homepages, things that is claimed that it can do.
So if you realy want it written I can do that but there are serious problems with sound, there are serious problems with Iso 3D, cant play 23.976, subtitles on 3D Iso is hopeless we are talking about up ti 10 seconds from start (where subs work i sync) lipsync is the same.
Sure ordinary small DB rip in mkw folder works fine but that can even machines to half the price also, sure it can be a very good box but right now it aint and that is not mentioned in the ads, neither the 3D/2D iso problem, lipsync or subs out of sync is not mentioned in the add, problems that should work from day one when they where set for sale.
The firmware should not be updated every two months but weekly on a new product if a company decides to sell before all functions are working as surposed.
Picture quality is fine no doubt about that, it realy fast even with a big libary but what is it worth if you have to resync sound and subs every 5 minutes (I dont se that info in the ads) maybee you think my words are a little hard but I only tell the truth, sadly the truth often aint apriciated when its not only positive things that are said.
I have said many positive things here and on Kodi forum but I also say the bad things, when you buy a surposed "premium" player you buy it to get exactly the ability to play the more demanding files flawless and it dont, not even close for now, do a customer have to wait for months before it works as surposed then the machine is sold to early.
I realy dont understand why even asking people about what they want to get added in the future, the goal must and have to be to get exsisting problems fixed first and asap when a unfinished product are sold to customers who thought they got a fully working product.
Would I have bought the box if the fine review HDMkv made on Kodi forum if it where made one day earlier, defenatly not but it where shipped the same day the review so I decided to see what I got and for now Im not impressed if I think on the video player part but again it will probably be very fine in time but when ?
Add did and do not say alpha or Beta product anywhere, the hardware part is very fine but firmware realy need a big improvement, the last firmware did a big difference but still need a lot of work until then I will not be happy or satisfied and the add and the machine will be a perfect fit.
Sure it not positive words and tone are hard but the hard truth are the only way to say things, when the other way is positive then I will talk very positive and recomend highly, for now I cant.
* H8 plays 3D-ISO well. Top 5 of all similar products on the market. There is room for improvement though and it will be further improved.
* We never advertised it as outputting 23.976. Himedia didn't either. Hopefully 23.976 will be added, but it's more down to Rockchip implementing it in chipset firmware.
* Subtitles on 3D ISO, fair enough. This will be improved.
This is an open forum and we appreciate all feedback. I did think your opinion was overly negative, but you are entitled to it.
If Himedia had waited 6 months to release then they'd have lost most sales to companies like Rikomagic, Ugoos who put zero effort into firmware and rush release products virtually weekly based on whatever new hardware is out there. There is a balance to be struck between getting the hardware out and perfecting firmware. I actually think H8 was released too early, the first firmwares were bad. But now, 3 months down the line, the firmware is pretty good.
Himedia have a proven track record of continuous improvement to their products and they will continue to improve H8.
-
That early FW has bugs - OK.
That hardware comes to market too early, because of competitors - OK.
That a lot of missing features will come later - OK.
Normally I am patient,
but H8 is announced/advertised as premium mediaplayer and >90% of the actual movies are in 23.976!!! So don't tell the people "Hopefully 23.976 will be added".
It is absolutely no question HiMedia and Rockchip have to implement it in the next weeks or the H8 customers are very annoyed, me included.
And the opinions in the forums are not good about Rockchip today. If they disappoint end-customers again, people will also lose the trust in Himedia and their, then bad decision to go with a RK SoC. (The SoC is the key component in the box, so I think HiMedia had choosen a supplier in which they can trust implicitly.)
So 23.976 is no question of hope this is an absolute must.
To your praise and glory of the H8:
Sorry Kodi plays some 3D-ISOs well but also some others not. - So this is C- grade.
Himedia player as temporary workaround plays 3D-ISO better but without forced subtitles. This means in practise no subtitles. - This is C+ grade.
And also standard files are not played well - I still use my very old and very slow Asus media player. (I would be happy if I could use my H8 with Kodi instead.)
What would you say if your car would be half the time in the workshop? - It is a useless car!
H8 is a premium box for a premium price. So it has to have A+ or minimum A grade and not C+ as HDMKV wrote very friendly here http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=247537 (http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=247537).
A mediaplayer with C+ grade is practically useless!
So from a customer point of view I can understand why Kilroy is upset.

Kilroy,
How do you get on playing 3D Blurays on your system.?
Personally I have lip sync issues with 3D with my Sony bluray player, and my Samsung bluray player before that.. I usually just adjust it with my amp... Not perfect but something that is present in everything 3D for me, not just H8..
Mort..

-
The only reason I asked about your experience with bluray 3D players is that might not just be the H8 that your system has lipsync issues with.....
Like my system I have issues with any box I play 3D with, that includes shop bought Blurays with retail bluray players...
Have you managed to play 3D Blurays successfully on your system with anything else other than the H8.?
And yes, I do have full 7.1 HD Audio setup..
Mort..

Kilroy, we do out best, the product works well for most people, and it will improve. But if you aren't satisfied you can return for full refund. Email us.
You can then go out and buy something else.
Problem is I don't think you'll find anything better...

I tried the same version on Avatar I'd had problems with on Kodi with the Internal Himedia player last night... It actually plays really nicely with the internal player so the H8 can definitely play these fine.. Same with Ant Man...
Hoping that they can sort it out with Kodi..

With my BD player I have no lipsync problems at all (Panasonic DMP-BDT460EG9 3D), if my lipsync problems where with a constant time delay +- I could do the same, problem is that delay is not constant but getting more and more wrong the longer time the movie have played so even with ajustment on the AV the delay get worse, the wierd part is that the external player is the worst (lipsync and syb sync) where Kodi do the best job but only becorse the subs keep in sync in Kodi.
Wierd part is the I also have lipsync problems in The Man From UNCLE 2D edition but there I suspect the rip (did not make it my self).
I have looked on the firmware today and I see some problems, to me the way the firmware are made it could give memory leak and that can give the lipsync and subsync problems.
I will go deeper in the firmware after the weekend and will decide if I give it a go and make my own or return the box, its all about the time I have to spare, the firmware is quite simple and not a complexed build.
The picture is very good I think even on smaller mkv 3d containers, the HDMI cable that the H8 arrives with gives more problems so I dumped that after day one, I use http://viablue.de/com/s900_hdmi_silver_ferrite_filter_triple_shield_cable.shtml (http://viablue.de/com/s900_hdmi_silver_ferrite_filter_triple_shield_cable.shtml) HDMI cable on all my units, streaming are all made by cable (cad7).
For some years ago there where a UK test with cheap and expensive HDMI cables and result where that there where no difference, that part have changed in some way, first the only tested ordinary BD files, after going to a medium quality HDMI 2.0 cable the world changed in my setup, much more stable picture, better sound and the internet running throug it to the telivision, the BD Player and AV but the H8 do not work/support that so made a new cad 7 cable to the H8.
For me the only big problem with the H8 is the lipsync problem but with that problem the box cant be used (3D Iso playback), the electric sound I have when starting playback HD Master sound is less important to get fixed but I will probably give it a look also.
Have you or do you know any who have tried to mount an external BD drive to the H8 ??
Cheers
-
It's strange that different people are getting different problems...
For me DTS-HD & TrueHD are perfect, everything is in sync.... 3D iso the lipsync is constant, if I adjust at the start of the movie it's fine throughout, exactly the same as with retail Blurays.. Standard Dolby is out slightly but also constant so can be adjusted within Kodi..

If anyone is interested the guys at Zidoo have just released a new version of Kodi 15.2 for RK3368. (Their firmware version v1.0.25 Beta)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ap3k2hf3bf1oyo0/kodi-X6-25.apk?dl=0
For me it has fixed all of my audio lip-sync issues... Although it appears to have broken 3D iso in Kodi completely for now..

Hello everyone , I ask help ... I mounted the new firmware with kodi 15.0 , but many iso DVD ( VOB format) are not executed. All are created with the correct structure " VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS " but do not work ..or some better and others do not ... if you look at them from a PC with VLC reads everything correctly . If I run with the player of the H8 not run " error code__ " .
If anyone can help me thank you very much ... Ps sorry my English use a translator .

You've posted the same thing in several threads. Please don't!
DVD rips with folder structure will play correctly in Kodi. The error code you report ( " error code__ " ) is not a Kodi error, it's a Himedia player error.
So this isn't a problem with Kodi.. And shouldn't be in this thread..
See other thread you posted in for more.

Sorry for the double publication . I wanted to know if you recommend me to try to install the new version of kodi which is discussed above ( Kodi 15.2 for RK3368 for ZIDO ) .... or the version is the same as the latest firmware ... Thanks as always for everything.

I recommend that you do not install Zidoo Kodi unless you know what you're doing.
It will run, but we can't guarantee that stuff won't be broken.
Himedia will update their Kodi with firmware updates, which tend to happen every 1-2 months.

Outstanding work!
I own also Q5 4k3D but now my H8 Octa is the king!
Thank you, HiMedia!
Tested a bunch of movies last night and the result is spectacular.
But no PVR here...
Have to reconsider this... lot of random reboots.
Sorry i'm confused which to buy now. The Q5 4k3D, or the H8 octa.
from my understanding, the Q5 uses a wrapper to play from kodi, so that it uses himedias own video player, otherwise the image quality will be blurier (something about kodi not supporting hisilicon chip?)
Downside from using the wrapper is less kodi support for some features, particularly kodi apps.
Whereas i heard the H8 doesn't use a wrapper. But this come at a downside of default blurier video quality? Also will i still be able to use a different video player e.g. MXPlayer, or will i be stuck with kodi's default video player?
Also any issues with the kodi apps on the H8?
PS: looked at the spec sheet, the H8 has 100mbit ethernet, whereas the Q5 has 1gigabit ethernet. So doesn't that automatically mean the Q5 is the better deal?
-
from my understanding, the Q5 uses a wrapper to play from kodi, so that it uses himedias own video player, otherwise the image quality will be blurier (something about kodi not supporting hisilicon chip?)
The Q5 uses a Mali-450 GPU, which is fullly supported in hardware by Kodi. The reason people use a wrapper is because features like 3D-ISO and 7.1 audio are not supported by Kodi, so you need the wrapper (which does indeed use Himedia's Android player for playback). Image quality in Kodi without wrapper is very good, the same as other boxes with Mali-450 like MiniX X8-H, Wetek Core etc. With wrapper installed, however, image quality is much better because it uses the Hisilicon custom hardware image enhancement engine (ExpressXEngine). This gives better contrast/sharpness to the extent that on various forums it's been called the best you can get and comparable to the top end Oppo Blu-Ray players.
Downside from using the wrapper is less kodi support for some features, particularly kodi apps.
This can be a problem, although it is minimal because the wrapper is only used for certain formats and not streams. There are a few threads in the Q5 section about customising playercorefactory (the file that initialises the wrapper) to further improve this.
Whereas i heard the H8 doesn't use a wrapper. But this come at a downside of default blurier video quality? Also will i still be able to use a different video player e.g. MXPlayer, or will i be stuck with kodi's default video player?
H8 image quality is comparable to other high-end Android boxes. It's certainly not blurry!
You can use MXPlayer is you can find/write a custom playercorefactory to call MXPlayer from Kodi. Kodi doesn't have easy set up for external players, it needs coding.See here: http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Use_external_players_on_Android
Also any issues with the kodi apps on the H8?
Not that I know of.
PS: looked at the spec sheet, the H8 has 100mbit ethernet, whereas the Q5 has 1gigabit ethernet. So doesn't that automatically mean the Q5 is the better deal?
It doesn't make much diffeerence. Video content will never go beyond ~70Mbs, even for 4K, and both 10/100 and Gigabit can handle this. There are also usually other bottlenecks in media boxes that inhibit maximum speed before you get to the limit of Ethernet bandwidth. In my opinion, Gigabit is still more a marketing thing in media boxes. I know many people will disagree with this. :)

hdmediaplayer + others, do you see problems with this file?: http://distribution.bbb3d.renderfarming.net/video/mp4/bbb_sunflower_2160p_30fps_normal.mp4
How about any of the others here: http://bbb3d.renderfarming.net/download.html
Can you point me to any specific freely available demo files that show drifting audio sync and/or subtitle sync?
-
-
I asked about that file because the poster 'James' stated in the 1.0.7 thread that the specific file had "Result: huge lag, audio&video out of sync :(", which I do not at all with testing.
When you say I should "Rip a real bluray to mkv and iso" this is pretty useless for testing / problem solving. There are many ways to rip video.
We need specfic samples where you are getting these problems so the problems can be investigated and resolved.
-
-
I tested a specific file for the forum poster 'James'. If you can send us links to specific files we can test them too.
I know how many we've sold and the overall feedback and return rate. Feedback in general has been good and returns (except weirdly for returns from Germany - I think subtitle problems are a large part of the negativity) have been normal.
There's nothing we can do beyond passing on reported problems to Himedia, which we are doing. We await the next firmware, I'm sure it will be an improvement. I hope enough of one to satisfy you.
I'm not going to have another week of circular conversation like last week, so I'm locking this thread and will delete/lock other threads that aren't about a specific issue (with samples we can test) or other support questions.
