Title: CONVINCED: Insufficient Power Supply
Post by: kodiloaded on June 30, 2018, 03:26:32 PM
I have the KdLinks A400 Version of the Q10-Pro, Ever since day 1 I have noticed while transferring large files to/from the internal HDD my airmouse will lag and or lock up intermittently, Also when trying to run apps/tasks while the transfers are in the background you experience the same, I recently added a Sunba 405-D20X PoE Security camera to my home ( Killer cam by the way see you-tube videos )

The camera came with a nice 12v 4amp PS I did not need to use, Turns out it's a direct fit, All of my issues with the Q10 Pro are gone, I even noticed using Mx Player or the internal player to access media on the HDD it is twice as fast as before, Do your research a 3.5 HDD under full load takes as much as 1.7 amps, That does not leave shit for the Q10 to function properly, Transferring files or watching a movie from the HDD at best you have 5-600 Ma left for the box itself, Thats just insufficient, Do yourself a favor and grab yourself a 12v 4a supply you wont regret it !

As far as electronics go as long as the voltage is correct the amperage does not matter over required specs, You could have a 12v 40 Amp supply and it would not matter, A device only pulls the amps it needs and no more, Under amperage however blows cheese !

I AM A LICENSED ELECTRICIAN BY THE WAY !

Derek.

Great! I think I could use extra power since I'm running an internal HD and two USB drives attached to the Q10.

Could you please point me to a suitable Power Supply, please? I'm not an electrician :-)

Thanks!

I need to find a similar one in Holland.
Could you also tell eme what plug I need. 5.5 x 2.5 mm o5 5.5 x 2.1 mm, or maybe a different one altogether.

Maybe something like this on this page.

http://www.poweradapter.nl/adapters/5v-12v-24v-adapters/ (http://www.poweradapter.nl/adapters/5v-12v-24v-adapters/)

Thanks a lot for your help!

Same discussion half year ago  ;).

Just to be sure before I order:

Are these good for the Q10?

I prefer to be safe because I have a HD inside and 2 external USB drives.
12V

2-4A (2 amp minimum, 4 amp safe maximum).

5.5 x 2.1 tip. Center pin positive.

In anticipation of internal HDD I replaced the power supply with 12V/5A:

In my opinion a power supply with 4A is more than enough to power 3.5 "HDD.

I've got a new powersupply as indicated above.

It really seems to work better now. The box seems to be more responsive. Transferring a file from pc to box over the network is faster.
It will also support a USB drive attached to the box without freezing.

So far, I'm convinced that more power works :-)

Thanks a lot for you input kodiloaded!

Was the plug right or you got to replace it?

Thank you.

I confirm the plug is right.
The positive is the central, as depicted by the image.

I want to thank you for the advice, I bought the 4A version https://www.amazon.it/dp/B071JVQ97Q/ (https://www.amazon.it/dp/B071JVQ97Q/) of that and it works flawlessly, the 3 TB WD red inside my Q10 thanks you as well  ;D

Cheers

You're welcome.  ;)
In my opinion with that feeder you can feed 2HDD  :)

So today I've made some current measurements in my Q10 Pro:
At power on when the mechanical hard drive starts spinning it reaches about 2A
During boot: 1A
With no app running: 0.6A
With the hard drive working (downloading torrents): 0.7A
With the hard drive working and playing a video file: 0.8A
With also an external unpowered 2.5 USB hard drive connected:1A

My hard drive is a 3.5" Toshiba DT01ACA050, the current consumption will vary with other hard drives.

I believe that most issues with the power supplys are caused by aging components (capacitors) and not the rating.

The "oldest" Q10 Pros still could be just 2 and a half years old. It must have be some very-very cheap design if it's components just getting amortized by nothing. And so why did the swap for a higher A rated PSU solved the issues in many cases? Or the "aging capacitors" are just eating away the power on the way? Not denying, just asking...

Yes, very cheap. Just go on ebay and see how much it cost a 12V power supply sent from China.
In you particular case it could be that the hard drive is very power hungry or the power supply was going bad anyway, bad capacitors usually just don't go bad overnight, they degrade over months.
I'm just stating that 2A should be enough for the common user.

Ah, I think I've just misunderstand your words regarding the capacitors and the "aging components".  I've thought you mean the components inside the Q10 Pro, not in the PSU. It would be still far the better case, as one only needs to swap the PSU and not to throw the whole Box away sometime because of it's components "aging"... So, yea, that also could be the explanation.

As far as electronics go as long as the voltage is correct the amperage does not matter over required specs, You could have a 12v 40 Amp supply and it would not matter, A device only pulls the amps it needs and no more,
If I didn't know better, I would of thought I typed that. Very well put!

Just go on ebay and see how much it cost a 12V power supply sent from China.
Then look around at your local electronics outlet (if you actually have one), or mail order and see what the markup is.  ;)

A device "only pulls the amps it needs and no more" when it is working correctly as designed/specified.
 When it goes wrong.....???

When it goes wrong, it fries, Not going to matter if its 2 amps or 40 its still going to cook if it decides to take a crap
