Yes, I've given up on it too! It started off well but the last few nightly builds, and the official release, have all crashed. Go back to 17.4 release.

I tried uninstalling 17.5 and then reinstalling it from Google Apps. It still didn't work >:(
Catch 22. If you have a backup of your Library keep it. If you haven't got a backup of your Library you can't get in to 17.5 to make one :-\
It's not just us! On the Kodi Form users with Nvidea Shield are getting the same problems!!!!
I would just wait until someone comes up with a fix?
Kodi Official: Fixes done in 17.5 release:
Joysticks: Fix accelerometers preventing screensaver
More robust way of handling audio output on variety of Android devices
Fix playback of DVD file over network on Linux
Update to FFmpeg 3.1.11
Fix up and down buttons on ir remotes with macOS High Sierra
Added latest apple devices to allow retina support
Fix not being able to add content manually to videolibrary
Fix power message handling for CEC
Fix jumping timeline while switching channel groups in Guide window

How do I do that?
You can look at the Kodi Wiki but, as this was written by sad nerds, it is far too brief and unusable for normal people!!!
What gets backed up:
*User Addons - Addon's you've downloaded
*Addon Data - Settings associated with your addons
*Database - The SQLite Databases
*Playlists - Your playlist folder
*Thumbnails/Fanart - downloaded images
*Config Files - sources.xml, guisettings.xml, advancedsettings.xml, etc
*Up to 2 non-Kodi directories on your local system (optional)
Before you install Kodi Backup you need to create a folder on your hard disk to store these backup files.
CREATE A BACKUP FOLDER
You only need to do this once!
Click on Kodi "Tools" icon (the wheel on the top-right)
Click on "File Manager"
Click on your HiMedia HDD (not the SDCard!)
Press the "Menu" button on your remote
Select "Make new folder" and press "OK"
Name your folder "Kodi Backups"
Go back to the Kodi main menu and highlight "Addons"
Click on the Backup tile that's just been added
Click on "Open settings"
Click on "Browse for remote path"
Click on "Kodi Backup" (or whatever you named the folder)
Click on "OK"
(This will appear as /storage/sda2/Kodi Backup)
Now click on "File Selection"
Select all of the files except the Custom Directories
Click "OK"
TO RUN A BACKUP
Click on the Backup tile
Click on "Backup"
Go away and make a cup of tea/coffee because the backup can take up to 30 minutes!
TO RUN A RESTORE
Click on the Backup tile
Click on "Restore"
A list of Backup appears, named as the date and time of the backup. The most reset backups are at the bottom of the list!
Click on the Backup you want restored
Go away and make a cup of tea/coffee because the restore can take up to 30 minutes

Please tell me that ExtendedInfo Script works on 18. It still doesn't on 17.5.1 :(.
I installed SPMC 17 as you suggested and ExtendedIndfo Script works perfectly there :). So why can't Kodi get their act together?????

Ok, thanks. I cannot access the Kodi Wiki or any Youtube or video tutorials so I will try this tonight. I only use Kodi to play local media and have never installed or done anything with any Add-Ons or used a repository whatever that is.

Hello,
I had the same problem and posted in the custom firmware forum, and I got a reply and the solution from developer pcristi.
I installed new 17.5.1 version from his link and everything is good again.
I installed very simple, with internal file manager from the downloaded kodi file on the internal HDD, not from USB drive. All settings were maintained.
I quote his post:
Kodi 17.5.1 include a fix of startup crash and is roll out on Google play soon will be available over automatic update, until then get it form Kodi mirror.

You don't need to go through all of that. You can download & install directly on your box using the Google Chrome app.

I installed new 17.5.1 version from his link and everything is good again.
Unfortunately not everything is good. Same story here, installed 17.5 and it crashed. After that updated to 17.5.1 and indeed no crashes anymore. But what happened to the sound?! Only stereo and 5.1 are available. With DTS or TrueHD or other sound tracks no sound at all. Only solution for me is to go back to 17.4 and that is what I did. After back on 17.4 everything is working again. I've disabled the automatic update in Android and I'm staying at 17.4

You may need to ensure the "wrapper" is switched back on. It had turned off when I re-installed 17.4 (before updating itself to the crash version of 17.5). Now 17.5.1 is working fine with wrapper and all HD audio passthrough.
-
Where can I find this wrapper?
Edit:
Nevermind. Found it in My Apps - Wrapper
Basically I have not touched this during install of 17.5.x nor when installing 17.4. I will check this again later this week to try to upgrade to 17.5.1 again
-
Did the upgrade to 17.5.1 from 17.4. This time no issues with sound. Works as expected. Wrapper settings are ok.
