Title: H8 Audio dropouts with Dolby Digital and DTS..
Post by: MortUK on August 16, 2015, 08:10:30 PM
Hi guys,

Currently using Firmware 11-AUG-15 HMD-1.0.4

I got my H8 on Friday and have been playing around with it.. So far i'm quite impressed with the box itself, It's a nice stable, solid running unit and does everything i could ask it to do with the internal player. 3D iso, Remuxes, TrueHD and DTS-HD.. I can't test Atmos... Yet.. ;o)

Anyway. With Kodi I have issues with audio passthrough. Everything is fine with down mixing, If I passthough Dolby Digital or DTS then I get quite serious audio dropouts every few seconds. Makes everything unwatchable. I've not had this with other boxes

I know it's early days for this unit but wondered if anyone else is experiencing this.?

This has been mentioned to Himedia. We haven't had the time to test it thoroughly yet but should have done so before end tomorrow.

It sounds like the kind of problem that will get ironed out through Kodi updates. Have you tried the 16 alphas? I will give them a test tomorrow myself.

Skank,

I never owned a Q5 so I can't compare them..

Futeko,

I've tried 14.2 - 15.1 - 16 alpha (17/08/15) with the identical problem on all versions..

I can confirm this bug.

In all versions of Kodi audio passed as 5.1 stutters in a major way every couple of seconds. No such problems with the hardware video player app. And no problems if Kodi is set to downmix to stereo PCM.

Himedia say that Rockchip (chipset manufacturer) are working on it.

In the meantime I continue to push Himedia to release a 'wrapper' for H8 so it Kodi can use hardware player app. This would be a workaround and would additionally give 7.1 passthrough and 3D ISO support to Kodi on H8.

I don't have confidence in Rockchip sadly... they all but abandoned issues on their last chip: the  RK3288.

This appears to be a fairly minor bug. Audio works fine except passthrough from Kodi.

I'm sure the combination of Himedia, Rockchip and the Kodi community (it's a Kodi exclusive problem and RK3368 will be a popular chipset) will get it fixed quickly.

RK3368 at launch has a firmware that is more stable and much more feature complete than RK3288 at a similar stage in it's development.

The problem is that many manufactures pushing new products at the market even without a decent quality control based on
functionality. If they even had taken time to check this then they could solve it before releasing... isn't that difficult I assume.

Hopefully Futeko can manage this the right way...

Hey guys.....I completely agree with horstvdm....I'm coming from the Open Hour Chameleon camp.  I just purchased the H8 and it looks like a great box and largely because of the KODI support.  It seems Rockchip is the biggest problem not giving out driver sets for their chipset....Thanks Futeko for all the info..........Really nice to see fast replies to questions.

To be fair it could quite easily be a Kodi issue.

The himedia external player handles DTS and Dolby just fine.. They just don't pass though correctly with the Kodi internal player..

It's not a question who to blame, it would be wise for such companies to have a quality check instead off pushing hardware at the market.
Can't be that difficult for a Huawei company the provide a better performance then the regular competition. Still waiting for a Netflix fix, doesn't work at this moment.

With a little help and open communication you can solve a lot off problems and have the best tool for home use.

Tried some 4K files, have no idea which files should work, but get many times a error message. Could be software/hardware related or a not supported files issue. It would be good as a manufacture
that you provide suchs files so that potential customers can experience the potential of such hardware.

Enjoy the day with a smile.

Marcel.
