I just did a full install trough play store of kodi 17.4
When I set up kodi I am told that a new controllers is detected, and so I want to set it up now. When I choose no, many buttons on the remote do not work, like the back, or context button. If I choose to set it up, there is a picture of a controller.
What the heck happened, and how can I get my trusted remote back in working order?
Please help :)

Upgrading to Kodi 17.4 from 17.3 does not change joystick control settings. The remote key re-mapping was introduced by 17.1 and has been around for a while.
Simple joystick fix is linked above (and is in the FAQ.... always worth reading by new users).

What specific model vanilla remote works so well?

The one that comes with the box! Works perfectly for video and music playback.
For Android/Google/YouTube usage a keyboard with pad is best for text input.
