Sounds like a Kodi 17 loop issue.
I turned off auto-updates from Kodi and re-installed back in earlier versions of 17.

I'd also suggest installing the latest 2.0.4 firmware (see the specific thread to upgrade firstly to 2.0.1, then 2.0.3, then finally 2.0.4).
All settings will be changed to defaults.

I confirm this bug as also present in 2.0.4 and Kodi 17.3 (the one that comes with 2.0.4)

I tried both official and custom firmware and both have the same problem.

Not sure if it's a Kodi issue or related to the new firmware. I was still on 2.0.1 and Kodi16 before that and had ZERO problems.

If it's a Kodi 17 problem then use Kodi 16?

I have been running Kodi 17.4 and firmware 2.0.5 on a daily basis since it was released, with no adverse behaviour (playback from HDD & NAS, not Kodi streaming).  It plays everything I want it to (mainly 1080p Blu-ray rips or remuxes and 720p TV series).
I'd recommend you try updating your system to the latest versions and see if it works for you?

Sorry to update this "old" thread
Just wanted to say that I will maybe go back to Kodi 16 to solve this issue like you said futeko.com
Firmware updates didn't solve the bug unfortunately
Thanks
