Title: Big problems with Truehd
Post by: Chocco on June 21, 2015, 10:26:39 AM
Can't believe I haven't noticed this before but maybe it's because most of my movies are dts HD and it just hadn't cropped up yet. It seems there are stuttering and huge sync issues with anything with a Truehd soundtrack. I thought it was a badly ripped file at first but then I tried several more all with the same result. I have a popcorn hour hooked up also and the same files were perfect on that. Is this something I can fix in the settings of either the q5 or kodi or is it a bug? Anyone else having the same issues?

Thanks

Yes, sure. 300, Heat, I am Legend, Disturbia, Final Destination series, the new Halloween and Friday the Thirteenth (I know they're really bad but they happen to have TrueHd soundtracks) all have bad syncing issues and look like the picture is running faster than the audio and with reduced quality. This doesn't happen with any non-TrueHd movie and also doesn't happen when I switch inputs on my amp to the Popcorn Hour. Hopefully someone will agree. Thanks!

Ive got "300"  and also "I am Legend" thats been ripped from my original purchases with AnyDVD HD in .iso form stored on my Synology NAS,  i'll run them later & look for any problems. Playback chain will be NAS > HiMedia Q10 > Denon 7200 > Darbee video processor > Sony es55 projector > 120"dia AT screen

Ok,  played about 20 minutes of "300" and only saw one , possibly two micro stutters on video only which were not noticeable on the audio playback.  These stutters were so short in duration that you could easily miss them.   "I am Legend"  was about the same.   I played back using Kodi 14.2/Wrapper.  F/W 1.0.9
Also played back from the Q10 using > "Media Centre" > "LAN" >NAS(Diskstation  and the results were the same.   There were no lip sync problems at all.       I have seen far far worse video/audio stutters on other machines that were unacceptable,  my Q10,s performance has been the best of them all so far.
Hope thats of some help

That's really helpful, thanks. I wonder if it's a kodi isengaard beta 2 problem then. I'm going to go back to beta 1 and let you know. Thanks again for taking the time!

it's very strange

you have set right parameter?
Go to settings - playback and set:
- HDMI output to RAW
- spdif output to close
- HDR output to raw7.1

you have AV-reciver ? what's diplay audio about codec?
it' atoms audio?

Yes, I have those settings and my amp indicates TrueHD. I ran out of time last night to downgrade Kodi versions but I'll do it tonight. The more I think about it, the more likely I think that it's the problem. I'm sure someone would have noticed on the Himedia before now, but a brand new beta version of Kodi may be a different story. I'll definitely report back. Thanks!

I installed   kodi isengaard beta 2 last night from 14.2,    i'll re-run those two films again asap to see if there is any problems

I hope you have the same problem! Last night I downgraded, upgraded, tried every variation  possible in the kodi settings and himedia settings but could not get those movies to run smoothly. My other player works fine  so it's either kodi or himedia. Every other movie works perfectly on the q5. It's very frustrating! Maybe it's an isengaard problem. I'll go back to helix and see if it does anything. Thanks again

I am running 1.09 firmware and have the same problems with TrueHD.  My tests have included Star Trek 2009 and Star Trek Into Darkness.  Kodi 15 beta or 14.2 didn't make a difference.  Audio is out of sync with video just slightly and the video is skipping frames with significant judder.  DTS-HD works flawlessly.

Hi, no they're all 2d, all played using the wrapper. I changed to helix and back, switched inputs on my amp, tried every conceivable combination of settings in kodi and q5, but these just don't pay properly. I'm completely stumped! If someone else is getting perfect play from a full blu ray rip (30gb+ file) with a Truehd soundtrack, I would be grateful if you could let me know your settings within kodi, just in case I'm missing something. I also tried mx player from the playstore with the same result.

Can people having problems with TrueHD please run mediainfo (https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo) on the files and post the result for the Audio section?

There is no general problem with TrueHD (the Himedia 4K3D products have been on sale for more than 6 months to demanding customers with no similar problems reported) so it must be something to do with how the files are encoded.

try differente HDMI cable?
You secure playback with himediavideoplayer ?

there is not "settings within kodi" you not use internal dvdplayer.  ???

Right, so I've tried the media centre and it's the same.

Here are the media info logs for 2 films that don't work (TrueHD) and one that does (being DTS HD). Because there is considerable judder in the picture, I've included the video files as well. I should also say that all my movies are ripped using MakeMKV. I rip them 1:1 with just main movie, main soundtrack and English forced subtitles.

What I notice immediately is that the TrueHd soundtrack has a much higher bitrate than the DTS soundtrack. Presumably that's not the reason though? Apart from that, they look pretty much the same, unless I'm missing something...?

Good idea. I tried it with the same results. Also swapped my HDMI cable. I'm going to try re-ripping it using DVD Fab and see if that helps. Can't understand why it's perfect on the Popcorn Hour but not on the Q5. It's obvious I'm in the minority though. Thanks again for all the help.

Hi,

aren't those problems only with 1.0.9 and 1.0.9.1 version of the firmware?
i.e. audio drops out.

I've have enough movies in MKV container (bluray remux) in Dolby TrueHD 5.1/7.1
and few in M2TS (especially for Dolby Atmos) and I have no problems.
I'm using 1.0.8.... I'm waiting to be fixed 1.0.9 -> 1.0.10 (maybe).

Otherwise I have no problems with 1.0.8

Regards
