Archos is very simple, leanback and good media center, it's not kodi level obvious, but it can be a good alternative.

Looks nice, does it also plays 3D iso's?
-
Nice Hint, Thx,
Will the Player bei able to Play Atmos, DTS:X and general 7.1 Audio Formats .......regards
-
Many thanks for this thread :)
I will install, check it out and do some testing. Always good to have options for the player and this one looks very promising.
EDIT 22/3 Downloaded and installed.
You do need to follow the above tutorial very carefully. The "press several times ok button" is very important to bring up the Android MediaPlayer option so audio works correctly. I can confirm full 7.1 audio is passed ;D ;D ;D (had time to check both DTS-HD MA & Dolby TrueHD).
No wrapper is required!! (the remote mapped "0" for stop key does not work however).
It is taking a while to complete my library but all sources including internal HDD, external USB and multiple NAS are showing correctly and can be indexed.
Also updating to Kodi 17.1 so it will be good to see what "bugs" they have fixed on the 17.0 release!
EDIT back up first if considering 17.1. See separate thread on remote control issue... :'(

I get force close everytime I want to play a movie with Archos player. I tried several movies, both in 1080P and 4K resolutions, but still application force closes ( I am using Q10 Pro with Android 7.0 2.0.1 firmware)
Unistalled! :-[

on android 5 firmware. 1.0.9 after FPS Auto-switch video does not start

Did some further testing tonight of Archos.
To members above who did not get the video to work, I would suggest trying again and following @looun's steps shown above, carefully.
It is especially important to get to the stage where you can select Android Media Player (step 1).
It plays 1080p and 720p videos fine (I did not test DVD's). DTS-HD and True HD 5.1 and 7.1 all pass to AVR.
AC3 and DTS 2.0 and 5.1 are also fine.
FLAC 7.1 and AAC 5.1 only pass as PCM 2.0.
Video samples played included VC1 and HEVC/X265 as well as H264 mkv and mp4 at different frame rates 23.976 up to 60Hz and 1080p.
Audio Blu-ray's played DTS-HD MA 2.0 and 5.1 played fine.
It saves markers to resume videos in the same directory as the file.
The free version brings up an ad before each file playback (simply requires remote to click the x in top left hand corner of slide and video starts).
Note this testing was on Android 7 /firmware 2.0.1 Q10Pro (internal 4Tb HDD) with a 1080p Panasonic TV. Testing completed with files from external USB HDD, internal drive and NAS (which it logs and saves).
The interface is simple to use (not as developed as Kodi) but it does playback quite well using Android without external assistance. It is a player and library for movies and TV only (not music or photos). It does read nfo files in the Kodi video format.
Given the nominal cost, I am likely to buy the full version to remove ads and keep updating it on the HiMedia once I am fully satisfied with the functions.

that's the point: simple to use and andorid tv "app style"... some times kodi i to complicate and Heavy
please add +1 for archos enhancement

Android MediaPlayer interface use AVPLAY ( hisilicon framework ), Himedia video player APP also use AVPLAY .
so ....Android MediaPlayer = Himedia video player .
so ...Archos = Himedia video player .. same setting ;)
Kodi use MediaCodec ( ANdroid framework ) = some problem.
ALso PLEX can use Android MediaPlayer interface ,but plex need plex server, archos is more easy.

No subtitle support is a big turnoff. :(
I stick with MX Player...

I stick with MX Player...
I have not tried a movie with sub-titles but can.
I did notice that it always gives you the option to download sub-titles when you have selected a file to play but did not try to see if this works. It would obviously depend on the movie itself and where they link the subs from.

I tested it with the hope of finding a solution for the known aspect ratio bug.
It's almost perfect. The aspect ratio seems to be ok for an 3840x1600 MKV but it fills the black bars wrong. So the video area is cutted at the bottom (this also happens with MX Player).
I will continue testing tonight.

Need some advise - because we can't add the internal Harddisk (Q10 Pro) folders to the library is the solution to use the SMB function of the box and add the movies from a folder of the SMB share?
-
so aac 5.1 - does that carry through ok and you get 5.1 sound?
Reason why i ask is often my x265 files contain aac 5.1 sound so i want 5.1 sound output

Are you referring to the audio pass through? I know that in Archios Player, there is a setting where you can choose between mode 1 and mode 2 pass through. I suspect that mode 2 is the path the Kodi development team has gone into which is SDK v23 and up only and mode 1 would suggest it is the old way of passing through.
I tested mode 1 on my 1.1.0 firmware. At first I did not have pass through because this setting is, by default, set to off. If you have upgraded and not changed this setting from off to something else, you might not have pass through audio.

There were several updates the last months... but still no solution for the subtitle fix and the internal HD also not possible to add to the library :(

Actually you can now add the internal HDD to the library (I forget how I did it but it seemed simple at the time via the Android directory) as I updated Archos after upgrading to firmware 2.0.4
It took a long time to re-index all my files....
Reverted to using Kodi 17.3 as my preference (with wrapper).

ARCHOS have release open-source edition of video player (https://plus.google.com/+ArchosSoftware/posts/Z2cMXPz3dEP)
And yes, you read it right: a free and open-source edition of ARCHOS video player is now available on github: https://github.com/archos-sa/aos-AVP
Since parts of ARCHOS video player relies on contributions from the open source community, the idea of opening up the code base to a broader developer community came naturally to us.
This way, we think that we can make ARCHOS video player and technology available to a larger and stronger user base and benefit from new contributions, ideas and innovations that will bring up new usages and customer experiences.
