I am still experiencing some serious problems with my HiMedia Q5 box.
I started a topic a couple of months ago (http://www.futeko.com/newforum/index.php?topic=1315.msg10274#msg10274) but haven't been able to sort out the problem.
I have tried about everything that is within my capabilities.
I have simplified my network to the point where I just got a router, a NAS, a PC and the HiMedia Q5.
Whenever I switch on the HiMedia I lose internet connection to my PC. Funny thing is I can still use Skype or a BitTorrent application.
Somebody on the Whirlpool.com.au forum suggested that this has to do with the Master Browser settings (https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2594592&p=-1&#bottom). I did more research into this and this seems exactly matching the problems I'm experiencing.
Now, can somebody tell me if there is a fix available to this problem? How do I change the master browser settings in the HiMedia Q5?
The networking page is very limited on the HiMedia and I can't see an option to change this setting.
Besides this issue I am very pleased with the box. If I can sort out this issue then it will reduce the level of frustration dramatically.
Many thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Luc

1. Turn off HiMdia.
2. Try stopping/disabling the following services on the windows client:
Computer Browser (browser)
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper (lmhosts)
WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service (WinHttpAutoProxySvc)
Bonjour service (if you have one)
3. Check proxy settings (Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings) and disable any option regarding proxy usage.
4. Try to ping google.com
5. If you got reply (you should be) then turn on HiMedia, and ping google.com again.
Do you have reply in both cases?
Try this as well:
nbtstat -a 192.168.0.35
Does it gives you the NetBIOS Remote Machine Name Table?
Do you see this line (which means it got the master browser role on the network)?

Since I don't have telepathic abilities it may help if you actually reply to my post. ;D It would have been useful in your original topic as well. ;)

Re: HiMedia Q5 Master Browser issues
Hi Eriol,
Thank you very much for your suggestions.
My apologies for the late reply; I've been away camping for a couple of days.
I have exactly followed your guidelines and here are the results:
I have disabled TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper and WinHTTPWbPoxyAuto-DiscoveryService.
I then pinged www.google.com and received a reply from 172.217.25.164. I had 4 pings returned with an average of about 35ms response time
I then switched on the HiMedia Q5 and tried to ping Google again. This time I had no response and CMD showed me:
"Ping request could not find host www.google.com. Please check the name and try again.
I then tried nbtstat -a 192.168.0.35
The response was:
LAN:
Node IpAddress: [192.168.10.152] Scope Id: []
Host not found.
So, all in all, no response from Google when HiMedia is switched on.
When I switch off the HiMedia everything goes back to normal.
Many thanks for your suggestions! I really appreciate your help and once again my apologies for the late reply bu whn going into the bush I don't really check the internet :-).
Cheers and all the best for 2017.

My bad, you should write "nbtstat -a 192.168.10.35" as you need to use your HiMedia box's IP there. Can you try that one as well?
-
Hi Eriol,
Happy New Year from Melbourne!
I've tried the "nbtstat -a 192.168.10.35"-command, but it replies with:
LAN:
Node IpAddress: [192.168.10.152] Scope Id: []
Host not found
(That is after the unit has been switched on).
Very strange indeed.
Cheers,
Luc

And can you ping or reach the samba share on the HiMedia device from your PC? Can you reach your PC from the HiMedia device (share on it)?
Happy new year from you as well! :)
-
Hi Eriol,
Yes, I can ping the HiMedia Q5 from my pc without any problems.
(Ping 192.168.10.35 results in 100% return and all less then 1ms)
I don't share content from my pc on the network, all data is centralized on the NAS which is switched on 24/7.
Cheers,
Luc

Please do the following command from the PC when the Q5 is on:
net view
And then do a nbtstat -a to all the hosts net view gives you.
-
Hi Eriol,
This is weird; I can only see my computer showing up under the "net view" command.
I can't see the NAS nor the HiMedia under "net view".
I've tried multiple times but always the same result.
Once again I really appreciate your help and perseverance to get this problem solved!
Cheers,
Luc
-
And if the HiMedia is turned off, can you see your NAS with net view?
-
I didn't look for it when I did previous tests.
Currently I'm at work but will try tonight.
Cheers,
Luc
-
Hi Eriol,
Nope, I can't see the NAS either.
This is what I see:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
C:\Users\Luc>net view
Server name Remark
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
\\PCLUC
The command completed successfully
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I can't see the NAS under net view but got access to it. I use GoodSync which synchronizes all my pc files with the NAS and never had an issue.
Also, I can listen to music or watch a movie on the NAS even whilst the HiMedia is playing a movie as well.
Very strange,
Cheers,
Luc

Doesn't seem that this will be a master browser error. We just disabled netbios on your PC and it's still doesn't work. On the previous thread I mentioned that this could be a router error. Did you managed to replace the router? My other guess is to try to take the Q5 to one of your friend and connect it to the network. If the internet goes off there as well that my point out that you have some problem with the box itself.
-
For the whirlpool forum:
Tell them that this is an android box and you can't use putty but you can use ADB to access is. Maybe they come up a good idea for you.
-
Eriol,
Thank you soo much for all the effort you put in here trying to help me out!
I had exactly the same problem with my previous router (Dovado Pro).
That's why I took it out of service and replaced it with a Netgear router. I did a factory reset before I started setting it up.
I only did the bare minimum to set up the network (Too keep it simple for troubleshooting).
Your suggestion to take it out and set it up on another network makes sense.
I will visit a friend this weekend and will try this out.
I've got no idea what ADB is but will put it on Whirlpool (And will do a search for it on Google as well).
Thanks mate for all the hard work!
Cheers,
Luc

Your welcome. ;)
Let me know how the test went with your friend.
You may ask any of your friend that has a laptop or smartphone to come at your place and try to connect to the internet while your Q5 is on. Just to know if the problem is only with your PC or this a network wide phenomenon.

Hi all,
As promised I took the HiMedia Q5 to another network. I also took my laptop.
The HiMedia didn't interfere on the other network and all was working fine. Whether the HiMedia was switched on or not it didn't make a difference in surfing the internet.
I took it back home and re-installed the unit back onto my network. I tried to surf the internet with the laptop with the HiMedia switched on or off and it didn't interfere at all. However, my home pc was still affected!
For one or another reason, which I don't know, my home pc doesn't like the HiMedia to be switched on. I still can access the net for Skype but can't browse websites.
My home pc works fine, runs Windows 10 and hasn't got any problems with other users on the same network.
I'm puzzled.
Cheers,
Luc

Can you assign the HiMedia box to a fixed IP in your router settings?
-
Yes, I can do that.
I have a fixed IP for the HiMedia and have this also listed as a favorite in the router settings.
The set IP is well outside the range of the DHCP server.
Cheers,
Luc

What anti-virus / firewall software are you using?
I have found previously that some settings can have a major effect on a home network.
Ensure it sees the HiMedia as being on a local and allowed IP address?
-
I am using Avira antivirus (Free edition), Malwarebytes (Full version) and the standard Windows 10 firewall.
(That is on the PC)
On the router I'm using the inbuilt firewall.
No problems accessing the net or the LAN as long as HiMedia isn't switched on.
-
You may check with tcpview if there is any difference trying to access google.com with browser or ping.
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/tcpview.aspx
The usage is fairly easy end self-explanatory.
Do they try to access the same ip (remote address) when box is turned off/on?
If the box is on do they stuck at SYN_SENT?
You may try to switch the LAN cable of the PC as well.

Have you tried switching off Avira and Malwarebytes (temporarily) to see if this changes the connection when the Q5 Pro is turned on/off? Perhaps also try switching off the Windows 10 and router firewalls, just in case? If you can pinpoint the problem, you can change around settings to try and fix your issue.
For Eset Smart Security Suite, I had to ensure my local network IP zone included all NAS's and media players.

Hi all,
Many hanks for all the help and suggestions.
However, the end result is that I have now accepted my defeat and I have decided to walk away from my HiMedia Q5.
I will put it up for sale and will convert an old pc to a HTPC.
There is nothing wrong with the Q5 except that it is interfering with my internet connection on my pc.
I assume this is an isolated case as I couldn't find anything similar on the forums. So, I'm not dissatisfied with the product; it's just that it didn't work in my situation.
Cheers,
Luc

It could also be an incompatibility with your router? Did it work fine at your mate's place with a different router and network settings?
