Title: USB HDD visibility and safe removal.
Post by: Mount81 on December 18, 2016, 10:08:33 AM
Hello!

I have two questions regarding if I would connect an external USB HDD to the Q10 Pro:

1. Is it safe to left connected to the Q10 Pro for a longer term, like would I need to manually detach from the menu, every time before I want to shut off the player, or is it safe for the HDD to turn off and on the device "just as it is"?!

2. Will I be able to see the content of the external USB HDD with SAMBA share from my Windows PC on the LAN?

Thanks for the replies!

1 Not so hard to safe remove USB device
 MediaCenter/Select USB device/Press Menu

No must do when player is turn power off.

2 Yes.
Ex:
Android 5.1.1: \\<ip_player>\share\sda\sda1
Android 7.0 HMD 2.0.0: \\<ip_player>\share\media_rw\sda1
Android 7.0 HMD 2.0.1(test f/w): \\<ip_player>\share\media_rw\<UUID>

1. I always turn off my media  players with my 5x HDD connected. never caused me any problems. If you want to SWAP a HDD on a running system it is highly recommended to "Eject" the relevant HDD first. The same as using a PC.
2. If you turn on Samba Server (from within setup) then you will be able to see all HDD from a Windows PC (or any other Samba Client).

Thanks for both!

(I did know already that there's a menu option for safe remove, but I wasn't so sure that during the process of shutting down the Android OS it will do the same...)

I'm hesitating between whether to buy an external USB or an internal HDD to the Q10 Pro. Mainly for sharing and storing video and music, but I lean towards to get an external one, since is very practical to have it mobile ready anytime I try to move it to connect directly to any of my home computers. But I guess copying files to and from an external (USB 3.0) one still would be much more slower, than with an internal HDD.

Any pros or contras you would mention regarding whichever may I go for?!

As strange as it may sound but copying to USB3 is slightly faster than to the Internal SATA HDD. performance is not a differentiator.
