Title: Does the firmware release update android OS?
Post by: chairdog on October 20, 2016, 04:24:52 PM
Does the firmware release update android OS, or is that a separate update?

Relevant since an update to Android 7 is said to be coming down the pipe in November.

Thanks,

I don't totally understand what you're asking.

1.0.8 updates the Android 5.1.1 OS and apps to latest versions and changes some stuff behind the scenes. It's not a major update.

Hi,

I'm asking how one updates the current version of the Android OS running on a HiMedia Q10 Pro to Android 7, once it is released.

Sorry, if the way I stated my question ws confusing.

Thanks,

The process will be the same as all the other updates. Either by USB stick and restore button or OTA.

I wonder if this is the case? USB-stick + Restore is the right procedure but a Menu update or OTA is doubtful. It might need a full clean at least for the Android part? I know smartphones still do it without wiping all data and settings, but good to be sure if it is tested or not?

USB-stick + Restore --> is clean install format everything /system /data /qbdata /cache.
USB update via menu or OTA are same processes with keeping /data --> Android 5.x.x will keep apps+userdata
Smartphones know patch OTA update witch is small download file with long time to apply patching every need it files and wipe /cache.

Good to know the difference between media player and a smartphone.

Will follow the Restore procedure for the big Android 7 release myself this time. ;) Normally always do an update via the Menu procedure which never caused me a problem. :)

Ok, so to be clear, the Android 7 update, when distributed by HiMedia, will be done so in the same manner/ format as the firmware updates?

Thanks,

Yes. The only difference is that you won't be able to update and keep settings. Whether USB or OTA it will be a clean install.
