The next firmware will be Android 7 Nougat based and should appear before end October.

Update from HiMedia as of today.

Next firmware will be an update to Android 5.1.1 firmware, and will be next week (week starting 17-OCT).

Android 7 firmware will follow. The reason for delayed Android 7 firmware is that they want it to be stable. Which does seem the correct way to approach things.

Sorry for the delay.

Seems to be the right approach to me. Getting shortcomings fixed is more important that a new OS (nice for marketing).

Out of curiosity:  is it known if Nougat will be Standard Android or Android TV/Leanback based?  That is not a trivial factor. I see the whole media player market moving to Android TV/Leanback. Himedia seems to be the last of the Mohicans. Things like HDMI-CEC come at OS level only with Leanback (but also still having some problems there) .
