Title: DTS 7.1 passthrouhg with HDMI not working?
Post by: pepe on September 09, 2016, 08:07:38 AM
Hi,

I have latest fw HIMEDIA H8 OCTA. 7-JUN-2016. FIRMWARE HMD-1.1.2 FUTEKO-EN.zip installed.

AVR is Bose Soundtouch 220.

Settings of the H8 are as described in http://www.futeko.com/newforum/index.php?topic=337.msg2299#msg2299

Problem:
Can anybody confirm, that DTS 7.1 output via HDMI is not working with Kodi?
In Kodi a movie with DTS 7.1 is shown as DTS 7.1, AVR connected via HDMI -> no sound at all.

DTS 7.1 passthrouhg IS working when H8 is configured to use S/PDIF (in H8-settings switched HDMI to S/PDIF).
Here the same movie is shown in Kodi as DTS 5.1 and played correctly with my AVR (connected via optical cable to H8).

With DTS 5.1 and passthrough there both HDMI or S/PDIF output are working correctly.

With native Himedia player passthrough output of DTS 7.1 is ok with both HDMI and S/PDIF.

Is there a difference to do a factory reset before installing the FW or afterwards?
I did a factory reset after installingthe fw, but it does not help.

BTW:
@Futeko: is there any hope to receive ever a new firmware with Kodi 16 from Himedia?
Or is the H8-fw-development canceled now?

Be honest? :-)

Peter

Futeko?
Is there any information about this topic?

I did a factory reset before installing fw 1.1.2 also, but the effect is the same:
no DTS-HD 7.1 over HDMI, only over S/PDIF.

7.1 channel over SPDIF is impossible. SPDIF supports 5.1 channel max.

It's difficult to get detailed specs for Bose Soundtouch 220 but judging from a photo of it's rear panel I think it supports 5.1 audio max. It certainly only has 5 speaker sockets. If that is the case, then to get 7.1 audio to output as 5.1 choose the second set of settings from the thread you link to: http://www.futeko.com/newforum/index.php?topic=337.msg2299#msg2299

Thanks for your comment.

It's clear, the Bose Soundtouch is only a 2.1 device.

All I want is to play a movie with DTS-HD 7.1 and hear the sound on the Bose as 2.1. The Bose Soundtouch
accepts a DTS 5.1 signal on its input and plays it as 2.1

Therefore Kodi has to downmix the DTS-HD 7.1, which is contained in the movie, to DTS 5.1.

This works only if the H8 is connected via SPDIF , but not via HDMI to the Bose Soundtouch.

When connected via HDMI the Kodi shows the audiotrack as DTS-HD 7.1 (the original, as contained in the movie),
but the Bose Soundtouch cannot play this and stays mute (no sound at all).

When connected via S/PDIF   the Kodi shows the audiotrack as DTS 5.1 (downmixed from DTS-HD 7.1) and
the Bose Soundtouch recognizes the audio and plays it as 2.1. So it should be.

Playing the same movie with Himedia Player works with SPDIF and HDMI.
Himedia Player shows the audiotrack in both cases (HDMI and S/PDIF) as DTS 5.1.

I think the downmix in Kodi from DTS-HD 7.1 to DTS 5.1 is not working, when the
H8 is connected via HDMI, but works with S/PDIF.

Kodi configuration is done as shown in http://www.futeko.com/newforum/index.php?topic=337.msg2299#msg2299 (second setting)

Any ideas?
